Red River - COE/Denison Damsite
Overview
Red River - COE/Denison Damsite offers a unique camping experience directly on the banks of the Red River in North Texas. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park provides a tranquil setting right below the massive Denison Dam. It serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the Red River Valley, offering visitors a chance to reconnect with nature while staying within reach of modern conveniences in nearby Denison. The park is well-regarded for its peaceful atmosphere and its proximity to one of the largest reservoirs in the United States.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of the Oklahoma border, the park is defined by its dramatic riverside location and lush greenery. The surrounding terrain features limestone bluffs and thick woodlands that offer plenty of shade during the warm Texas summers. Because it sits at the base of the dam, the area feels secluded and peaceful, with the steady sound of moving water creating a relaxing backdrop. The elevation changes in the area provide excellent vantage points for viewing the river as it winds through the valley.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is designed for those who appreciate a more traditional camping experience without sacrificing comfort. Most sites offer water and electric hookups, and many are positioned to provide direct views of the river. The park infrastructure supports a variety of RV sizes, though it remains popular for its natural, unpaved charm in certain sections. Key features include:
- Spacious parking pads with picnic tables and fire rings
- Well-maintained restroom and shower facilities
- A centralized dump station for guest use
The sites are known for being exceptionally spacious, allowing plenty of room for outdoor setups and quiet evenings under the stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw here is the legendary striped bass fishing, as the waters below the dam are some of the most productive in the region. Just a short drive away, Lake Texoma offers expansive boating, sailing, and swimming opportunities. For those interested in local history, the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site is located in downtown Denison. Hikers can also explore the various trails that wind through the rugged terrain of the Red River valley, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and wildlife photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for avid anglers and nature photographers looking for a scenic basecamp. It is awesome. So peaceful. Eagles, fossils, fishing. (Photography great). So glad we found it. It's also a migratory route for Arctic Snow Geese & Sandhill Cranes.

My experience was very good. The sites are spacious and laid out well. There are only 19. The town is nearby for supplies. This is a nice spot for fishermen and a great spot for short stays. There would not be enough activities in the area to keep the kids happy or for long stays or by others unless they are looking for just a quiet spot to stay in the fall and winter. I suspect the Spring and Summer periods are quite busy.

We went here for 3 days and it was horrible there was no curtain in the shower and the windows were open so bugs and tides would come in and give us a scare while we were in the shower. The camp sight was clean so I gave it a 2 star but there was a lot of wasps and Beatles and at night there was spiders on the trees and also there was no trees so at 10 it would be hot. The river near by is bad that once I came out of the river I hade red stuff things that were gross and every hour there was a siren that was loud and so long that it gave us a headache . The only good part is that the gas station near there is the best gas station I have ever seen in my life and it is so clean and has so god customer service that once I was 10 cents short and the guy working there payed the 10 cents for me .

The campground is clean and well maintained. It is a 50 yard walk to the river. Nice picnic area as well. Plenty of shade trees to help keep the Texas sun off of you. There is a dumpster and a dump station on site as well.
