Reserve Faunique de Matane et de Duniere/Camping Etang A la Truite
Overview
Camping Etang A la Truite is a premier destination for those seeking an authentic wilderness experience within the Reserve Faunique de Matane. Managed by Sepaq, this campground serves as a vital gateway to one of Quebec's most rugged and beautiful landscapes. It offers a structured yet rustic environment where travelers can escape the hustle of city life. The park is renowned for its conservation efforts and its role in providing a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna, making it a cornerstone of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
Location & Surroundings
Located near Saint-Jean-de-Cherbourg, QC, the park is nestled in the foothills of the Chic-Choc Mountains. The surroundings are characterized by deep glacial valleys and the winding Matane River. This area is far removed from the coastal tourist traffic, providing a peaceful inland retreat. The forest canopy is dense, primarily consisting of yellow birch and balsam fir, which creates a secluded atmosphere for visitors. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by some of the most striking topography in the entire Gaspe Peninsula.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground offers several options for RVers, including sites equipped with two-service hookups providing water and electricity. While the park maintains a natural aesthetic, it provides essential modern comforts such as clean washrooms and shower facilities. Each site typically includes a fire pit and picnic table, allowing for a traditional camping experience. A key feature of this specific campground is its proximity to the trout-filled pond, which offers a serene focal point for evening relaxation and photography.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The reserve is legendary for its wildlife, boasting the highest density of moose in Quebec. Visitors often participate in guided moose-watching tours or explore the numerous hiking trails, including sections of the International Appalachian Trail. Fishing is another major draw, with opportunities for Atlantic salmon fishing in the Matane River and brook trout fishing in the park's many lakes. For those seeking a view, a trek to the summit of Mont-Voliere provides a panoramic vantage point over the vast forest stretches.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize wildlife observation and outdoor adventure over commercial resort amenities. It is a paradise for photographers, hikers, and anglers looking for a quiet base camp in the woods. Because of its remote nature and focus on conservation, it is best suited for nature enthusiasts who appreciate the silence of the wilderness. If you are looking to disconnect and immerse yourself in the heart of Quebec’s boreal forest, this park is a perfect fit.

Very satisfied with our stay, all the service was top notch! Matane-sur-Mer reputation for the moose sector of Quebec is real! We harvested a big female 3hours in our first day so very happy!

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying a couple of night in our rv. The property is well maintained with wonderful staff to help answer any questions we had and very dog friendly. The washrooms and shower area were some of the cleanest I’ve seen while camping. Lots of great hiking and fishing close by. Or Great to just go and explore!

Absolutely BREATHTAKING camping experience, however; be AWARE that the drive to the Trout section (Étang à la Truite) requires a 40km drive on gravel logging roads. It is a beautiful drive if you have an adequate vehicle (4X4), however if you don’t have a good off-roading car, the hour drive may take you upwards of two due to maintaining a slow pace to ensure your car does not get damaged. Other than that, the amenities are spotless, the campsites are stunning, and the peace and quiet is priceless! NOTE: Do not forget to stock up on all essential items such as food, water, alcohol, other essentials as you are about an hour and a half from society.

It was the end of the fishing season in 2023, at first I was thinking prices were too expensive but after seeing the chalet, wow looked like it was a 5 star hotel, amazing place and animals that we saw were coyotes, partridges and mooses we also caught some fishes, nothing special. In my mind this reserve faunique is more for hunting than fishing. Prices are fair😘👍. Yes we will go back, but it's too far from Montreal 😢. The people working there are very nice and beautiful the best,👍. When we see such beautiful places within "Belle Province" proud to call ourselves Canadian, Quebecers.😘.

Very beautiful and rustic reserve with many 4WD roads. We saw many moose in the reserve. The campsites are very clean and well maintained with proper tree cover. So no worries about shade in a hot summer day. The washrooms are clean and have hot showers. The picnic area is well maintained too. Although we had no idea that wildlife reserves are basically places where you can hunt wild animals. We were unhappy about it but anyway we are happy to see wildlife and spend some time in nature. There are many hiking trails but we didn’t see anyone hiking and the trails weren’t maintained so we didn’t dare to go. My partner and I are from Ottawa and we don’t get to see such beautiful wild and rustic places here. We would love yo visit again!!
