Overview
Deep in the heart of the Boreal forest, Camping Lac de la Vieille offers a quintessential wilderness experience within the Réserve faunique de La Vérendrye. This destination is a haven for those seeking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the raw beauty of Quebec's northern landscape. Unlike high-density resorts, this park emphasizes a peaceful connection with nature and provides a rugged, authentic backdrop for your next outdoor adventure.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately midway between Mont-Laurier and Val-d'Or along Route 117, the park is nestled within a vast network of waterways. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests of spruce and birch, punctuated by over 4,000 lakes and rivers. This remote location offers a true sense of isolation, where the only sounds you are likely to hear are the calls of common loons and the gentle rustle of the wind through the trees.
Amenities & Park Features
The facilities at Lac de la Vieille cater to self-sufficient travelers. While the sites are more rustic than commercial parks, visitors can find semi-serviced sites that accommodate RVs. The park focuses on preserving the environment with several key features:
- Direct access to a public boat launch for lake exploration.
- Spacious, wooded sites offering excellent natural privacy.
- Accessible water points and waste disposal stations for RVers.
This minimalist approach ensures that the focus remains on the surrounding wilderness rather than urban distractions.

Réserve faunique La Vérendrye is a vast wilderness area in western Québec, renowned for its expansive canoe-camping network and pristine natural beauty. Spanning over 4,000 lakes and 800 km of interconnected waterways, it offers one of North America’s most extensive and least crowded paddling destinations. With nearly 20 established canoe-camping circuits and over 500 backcountry campsites, La Vérendrye is a haven for paddlers. These routes range from relaxed 2-day loops to challenging 6-day adventures, accommodating groups of up to 10 people per site. Each campsite is equipped with a fire pit and pit toilet, though drinking water must be filtered from nearby sources. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at the Le Domaine registration center, and shuttle services are offered for one-way routes. The reserve is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts, offering abundant opportunities to catch species such as walleye and pike. A daily access fee applies for fishing, and visitors are required to hold a valid fishing license and adhere to local regulations.

Beautiful place and so many routes. Perfect for all levels. I love the fact that there’s a campsite at the start point as well in case you arrive late but want to start early the next day. Getting canoes from rental is easy. They have paid showers too.

Yes this is a wilderness Reserve and Provincial park, its not going to have amenities like resorts outside of its boarders. come prepared to spend time here without connectivity to the rest of the world. the closest urban center is 500 Km south. its going to be busy from May thru July. this park caters to people looking to enjoy a few days of fishing or hunting, the territory is vast there are many miles of roads and water to explore. be prepared to travel on them. Remember that the park attendants are there to make sure that you get what you paid for and have access to what you reserved. they are not your personal concierge. they don't have to bend over backwards to ensure that you have the best vacation possible. if you don't know what your doing or neglect to plan properly its your own fault. if you are a novice at camping and fishing I strongly recommend spending your time elsewhere. if you don't know what your doing this is not a good place to learn. I strongly infer that those who are high maintenance and need lots of help getting what they need to vacation at a resort or lodge and to hire a guild. this park is a DIY experience. the cabins on many of the lakes are rustic, there not private 5 star hotel suits. sometimes they are missing items, the beds don't have sheets and pillows. sometimes you have to bring your own water and source of power. your going to sacrifice convenience for solitude and quite, if your going to come here you have to be able to support yourself. there are no modern playgrounds or sports facilities, the interpretive center is small, there are no educational or summer programs for kids to be babysat. I would not recommend this park for large tour groups of family events, there are no pavilions with electricity and water to hold large social gatherings. washroom facilities are minimal and rustic.

I went there during a 10 day canoe-camping trip and it was fabulous. The view of the different lakes were amazing with nice campsite for us to rest every evening. The portages trail were well maintained and were nice to walk. Overall, we got a total of 15 minute of rain during the whole 10 day. I would recommend to absolutely everyone.
