Richmond Lake State Recreation Area

Overview

Richmond Lake State Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape on the rolling prairies of northeastern South Dakota. Spanning over 1,000 acres, this state-managed park centers around a beautiful man-made lake, providing a lush, green contrast to the surrounding agricultural landscape. It is widely recognized for its peaceful atmosphere and diverse recreational opportunities, making it a favorite for those traveling through the Aberdeen region. Whether you are seeking a weekend of fishing or a quiet basecamp for regional exploration, the park provides a welcoming environment for RVers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately ten miles northwest of Aberdeen, SD, the park is nestled within a scenic mix of hardwood forests and prairie vistas. The lake itself is divided into three distinct areas: the Forest Drive area, the boat ramp area, and the Richmond Lake Campground. This layout ensures that while the park remains accessible to the city’s services, it maintains a secluded feel. Visitors often remark on the abundant wildlife, including deer and various waterfowl, that frequent the shorelines and surrounding meadows.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground caters well to RV travelers with a variety of electric hookup sites that can accommodate different rig sizes. Guests have access to modern comfort stations featuring flush toilets and hot showers, as well as a convenient on-site dump station. Recreational features include:

  • A sandy swimming beach for summer cooling
  • A 27-hole disc golf course for family fun
  • Several miles of trails for hiking and biking

Water enthusiasts will also appreciate the accessible boat ramps and designated fishing docks located conveniently near the camping loops.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the city of Aberdeen offers unique local flair, most notably Storybook Land and Wylie Park, which are popular for families. History buffs can explore the Dacotah Prairie Museum to learn about regional heritage. On the water, Richmond Lake is a premier destination for trophy fishing, with anglers frequently catching walleye, northern pike, and panfish. The Forest Drive area provides an excellent backdrop for bird watching and nature photography throughout the year.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is ideal for outdoor-loving families and couples who prefer a more natural, state-park setting over a commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy water sports or fishing but still want to be close enough to a mid-sized city for supplies and dining. If you appreciate spacious campsites and a slower pace of life, Richmond Lake provides the quietude necessary for a relaxing South Dakota getaway without sacrificing essential modern conveniences.

Do not go if you hate mosquitoes. We made a reservation to camp for two nights, drove in, paid for the daily passes $50+ (after driving 3 hours also, so additional gas money). Got out of our car to MOSQUITO HELL. Imagine rain, but instead of droplets, it's mosquitoes. They had apparently sprayed for mosquitoes the week prior too. When we got back in the car after getting bit a bazillion times just trying to get to the bathroom, our phones alerted "WEST NILE DETECTED IN YOUR AREA" what the hell? No info on the website about that. We left immediately. I called asking for a refund and obviously I was super nice about it cuz it's not their fault it's mosquito hell there, but I was surprised that I could not get a refund for something that was out of my control. Massive waste of about a hundred dollars and a few hours of packing and driving.

Got stopped today while in our vehicle by a blonde haired younger lady . She wiped in the parking spot next to me looking mad and said where is your park pass as I pointed to it in the dash she goes well it has to be on the left side. It was in the left side . As I’ve visited many parks in sd as I live here and she goes well the gfp needs to be able to see it in your dash . They clearly could if they looked . Then said it needs to be in the right side I meant it’s been a long day I’ve been here since 6a.m . No actually on the pass it say display anywhere on dash and little does miss wanna be game fish and parks I just got done working 5 16h nursing shifts in a row and was trying to enjoy our day off with family . But immediately after the seriously rude encounter we just left . Please next time just let the conservation officer do his job because I’m sure impersonating an officer isn’t a good look for you, just because you hate your job doesn’t mean you need to take it out on people enjoying there day . We did absolutely nothing wrong and this women made us feel unwanted there for no reason . When we had a pass and just arrived didn’t even get out of the car yet .
