Rio Grande/Mogote
Overview
Situated within the stunning boundaries of the Rio Grande National Forest, Mogote Campground offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a genuine connection with nature. This rustic destination is defined by its tranquil riverfront views and its position as a gateway to the southern Rocky Mountains. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park emphasizes a quiet, unplugged environment where the rushing sounds of the Conejos River provide a natural soundtrack to your stay.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 12 miles west of Antonito, CO along Highway 17, the park sits at a refreshing elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. The landscape transitions from the high desert plains into lush river valleys shaded by tall ponderosa pines and cottonwood trees. The surrounding geography is characterized by dramatic rock formations and the sparkling, cold waters of the river, making it a picturesque basecamp for exploring the high-country terrain of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service facility designed for dry camping enthusiasts. While you will not find electric or sewer hookups, the park provides the following features for visitors:
- Spacious parking spurs that can accommodate large RVs and trailers up to 45 feet.
- Essential services including vault toilets and trash collection.
- Individual sites equipped with a picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring.
Hand-pumped drinking water is available seasonally, ensuring that while the experience is primitive, basic needs are met. The layout provides ample privacy between sites, allowing for an authentic off-grid experience beneath a canopy of stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. The Conejos River is famous among anglers for its premier fly fishing opportunities, particularly for brown and rainbow trout. History buffs often travel into Antonito to board the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge steam train that winds through the mountains. Additionally, the nearby South San Juan Wilderness offers miles of hiking trails and wildlife viewing for adventurous spirits.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer solitude and natural beauty over luxury amenities. If you value a quiet atmosphere and direct access to pristine wilderness, you will find this park to be a perfect match. It is particularly well-suited for trout fishers and nature photographers who want to stay as close to the water as possible. Those who enjoy a traditional camping style with the convenience of a designated site will appreciate the rugged charm found here.

Well cared for! Camphost does a good job. Upper loop and lower are both different but beautiful. Pretty part of the state! A great place to stay.

We usually go backpacking but joined friends at Mogote. It’s definitely one of the nicest campgrounds we’ve been to. The bathrooms were really clean!! The host, Sam, was also really great. Makes me want to go “car camping” more often!

The campsite was very clean and the manager was so nice and helpful. It was a perfect spot to relax and sleep right near the river. Would definitely stay again!

Upper loop doesn't have many trees and is very open. It looks more desert like. The lower loop has all the great trees, many sites have amazing river access. Be prepared for a lot of mosquitoes. There seems to be a swampy area near sites 22 and 23 near the trash cans that produces these pesky biters. Sam, the camp host does an amazing job at keeping the sites clean and friendly. The bathrooms are very clean and well stocked. If you run out of supplies, there is a small and friendly mercantile about 5 minutes from the campground for you to stock up on what you need, including your fishing license(cash only). We did not see much wildlife other than chipmunks, occasionally we saw a deer on the other side of the river and a couple fisherman saw a bear come down to fish on one of the river islands.
