Rio Grande/Thirty-Mile
Overview
Rio Grande and Thirty-Mile campgrounds provide a tranquil retreat within the expansive Rio Grande National Forest. Located about 30 miles from the historic town of Creede, these sites offer a rugged escape for travelers looking to experience the raw beauty of the San Juan Mountains. This area is characterized by its peaceful environment, where the sounds of the wind through the trees and the nearby river replace the noise of city life. It is a destination that favors nature over commercial development, offering a genuine mountain camping experience for those who appreciate the Great Outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
The campgrounds are situated at a high elevation of approximately 9,300 feet, nestled along the upper reaches of the Rio Grande. The surrounding landscape is a striking mix of alpine meadows, dense spruce forests, and dramatic rock formations. Just a short distance away, the Rio Grande Reservoir offers a sprawling body of water mirrored by jagged peaks. The proximity to the Weminuche Wilderness ensures that the air is crisp and the views are unobstructed, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busy corridors of southern Colorado.
Amenities & Park Features
As National Forest sites, these campgrounds offer a primitive setting without the amenities of a luxury resort. There are no utility hookups available, so RVers should be prepared for dry camping with adequate battery power and water storage. The facilities are simple but well-maintained, featuring vault toilets and potable water accessible via hand pumps. Most individual sites are equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings. The layout is designed to harmonize with the natural terrain, providing spacious sites that offer more privacy than most commercial parks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the incredible access to outdoor recreation. The Rio Grande River is a premier destination for fly fishing, known for its healthy trout populations and scenic banks. For those who prefer the trail, the Squaw Creek and Continental Divide trails are easily accessible, offering paths that lead deep into the backcountry. Boating and high-altitude photography are also popular at the nearby reservoir. A trip into the historic town of Creede allows visitors to explore local galleries, mine tours, and the renowned Creede Repertory Theatre.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is an ideal match for RVers who prioritize solitude and wilderness access over modern conveniences like Wi-Fi or sewer connections. It is best suited for travelers in small to mid-sized rigs or truck campers who are comfortable with self-contained living. Nature photographers, avid anglers, and hikers will find the park serves as a perfect basecamp for high-altitude adventures. If you are looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the mountain landscape, this quiet corner of Colorado is exactly what you need.

Hidden gem! Beautiful spots next to the river. When we were here unfortunately there was no water but the spots and views were great. Some moose tracks and poop laying around though, although we did not see them (luckily). Not free anymore: $10 a night.

Please be advised this review should be for Antlers Rio Grande Resort Campground Creede Colorado. Very quiet, secluded, peaceful, and beautiful campground. Everyone that runs this place was always pleasant to deal with. Definitely would recommend.
