Roche A' Cri

Overview

Roche-A-Cri State Park offers a serene escape centered around a massive 300-foot rock formation rising sharply from the surrounding plains. Located in the heart of Wisconsin, this park provides travelers with a rare glimpse into the ancient past through its preserved Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. Unlike high-traffic resorts, this destination focuses on natural preservation and a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that allows visitors to truly connect with the landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Friendship, WI, the park is nestled within the Central Sands region, a landscape defined by its unique geology and sand-bottomed creeks. The surrounding area features a mix of towering white pines and lush oak forests that create a secluded feel. While the park feels like a hidden wilderness, it is conveniently located near the Adams-Friendship community, providing easy access to local essentials while maintaining a peaceful, wooded environment.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping experience at this park is intentionally rustic, catering to those who prefer a traditional outdoor experience. RVers will find wooded sites that can accommodate various rig sizes, though it is important to note there are no electric hookups or dump stations on-site. Key features include a 303-step staircase that leads to the top of the mound for panoramic views, several miles of interpretive hiking trails, and accessible vault toilets and hand-pumped water stations located throughout the campground.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the hiking trails of the mound, visitors often head to nearby Castle Rock Lake and Lake Petenwell for premier boating, fishing, and swimming. The park is also a short drive from the Quincy Bluff and Wetlands State Natural Area, which offers additional birdwatching and exploration. For those seeking a day of excitement, the world-famous attractions of Wisconsin Dells are located only 25 miles to the south, making the park an excellent quiet basecamp for regional exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is the perfect destination for nature photographers and history enthusiasts who want to explore one of Wisconsin's most significant cultural landmarks. It is ideally suited for self-contained RVers and van lifers who enjoy a primitive camping style and value silence and privacy over modern resort amenities. If your travel goal is to trade screen time for scenic vistas and ancient history, this park will perfectly fit your itinerary.

Its an amazing park! I've been coming here since I was a kid. The mound with a little over 300 steps is a highlight, the top is a beautiful overlook of the area especially seeing the trees in the fall for many along with the petroglyphs which are really cool and chickadee rock is a way smaller roochecri mound they they allow free climbing. they're campgrounds with grills, a decent couple playgrounds, bathrooms, waterbubblers, a small creek. Its also dog friendly on leash, its really a nice park. its great for locals and people visiting family or in the dells-Steven's point area. always recommended!!!🥰🏞 you can get a sticker for your car and go in for free I believe, we have a property in adams and we just walk through the woods even in off season and they're are usually others doing the same, as long as you pick up after yourself since they're no rangers or anything they let people use the trails.

Hiking trails are great, and quite a few Geocaches if you are looking. Picnic areas are well maintained, tables are newer.

Well maintained throughout the park. The petroglyphs are awesome. Minus the recent graffiti. The bios from the top of the 303 stairs is amazing

Overall a cool park with a canopy of trees. Trails are clearly marked, services easy to find. Enjoyed hiking around here with family. The 303 steps isn’t bad, if your in shape less than 10 minutes, more casual 15-20 minutes. The walk down from the top offers views as well.
