Rochon Sands Provincial Park offers a serene and picturesque escape located on the scenic south shore of Buffalo Lake in central Alberta. This popular provincial destination is well-regarded for its expansive sandy beaches and refreshing waters, making it a top-tier choice for summer recreation. As a protected area, the park maintains a high standard of natural beauty, providing a peaceful environment where RVers can truly disconnect from the daily grind while enjoying one of the region's most beloved lakes.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled near the quiet community of Erskine and within easy reach of Stettler, the park is set in the heart of the Central Parkland region. The surrounding geography features a beautiful blend of open prairie landscapes and lush lakeside vegetation that provides shade and privacy for many campsites. Buffalo Lake itself is one of the largest bodies of water in the region, offering a vast horizon and plenty of space for various watercraft without the feeling of being overcrowded even during peak season.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for RVers, offering a selection of power-serviced sites that accommodate different rig sizes, along with unserviced options for a more traditional feel. The park is designed with water lovers in mind and includes several key features:

  • A wide sandy beach that is ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
  • A heavy-duty paved boat launch for easy access to the lake.
  • Well-maintained playgrounds and large communal green spaces for children.

On-site facilities also include pit toilets and communal water taps, ensuring that self-contained RVers have the basic necessities required for a comfortable and extended stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the primary draws of swimming and sunbathing, the lake is a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts and windsurfers. The calm mornings are perfect for kayaking along the shoreline to spot local birdlife and enjoy the stillness of the water. For a change of pace, a short drive to Stettler allows travelers to ride the famous Alberta Prairie Steam Train, or spend an afternoon at a local golf course, offering a diverse range of recreational activities within a small radius of the park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an exceptional match for family travelers who want a safe, beach-oriented environment for their children to play. It also caters specifically to boating enthusiasts looking for easy lake access and a reliable place to launch for a day of fishing or water sports. Rochon Sands Campground offers sites suited to both RVs and tents, including open spots near the lake and others nestled into the surrounding forest. There are a handful of walk-in tent sites as well. Enjoy lots of beach and lakeside activities here: swimming, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, power boating, fishing, birding and wildlife watching.

Clean sites, very quiet. Beach is nice and there is a lovely walking trail around the campground. My daughter and I love it there. We were able to check in a few hours early as well, which was a huge bonus. We will be back :)

When the water level is low enough, the sandy beach besides boat launch site is gorgeous for enjoying the summer sunshine. The sand is so soft and laying on it feels like u are in somewhere southern ocean beach. The campground nearby is pretty organized, and bushes and trees around each site provide good privacy. Each site is far away from the neighbours. If u enjoy this park please don’t forget to pay $1 at the beach entrance to local foundation which maintains this park

This is the best beach on Buffalo Lake. The one section of it is very rocky, but the other side is exceptionally nice sand. Very soft and sandy, not rocky at all. The actual lake itself can vary depending on time of year and depth as to whether the water is clear or mucky, but do expect some seaweed. The beach itself is average sized. The depth is very shallow so that you can walk out likely 200 metres or more and still have it not past your waist. This beach is lovely but not too busy. Even on busy weekends I have never seen it so busy it’s impossible to snag a decent spot. The beach has an old change room, and some stinky and dirty outhouses. But thankfully it does have a shower to rinse off at. If you walk a ways or drive about two minutes from the beach you’ll get to a little snack shack which is tasty, and a playground which is new and quite good. My kids enjoy it. There also is an older playground right at the beach, but it’s not the greatest. The beach asks for a dollar or two per person but it is not enforced strictly. This is my favourite low-key central Alberta beach. And definitely a lot better, in my opinion, than the other beaches I’ve been too on Buffalo Lake.

This is a beautiful beach to go to, we absolutely loved it and would go back. They have a play structure here, day use area, very clean place. No lifeguard on duty. Dogs are allowed at this park (on a leash) but not allowed on the beach. Outhouses are located at the beach and near the entrance of day use area which are kept very clean. Sandy beach but rocks are in the water so wear your water shoes. Boat launch at entrance of day use area.
