Rock Lake

Overview

Rock Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential Alberta wilderness experience tucked away in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. This destination is less about modern luxuries and more about unplugging in nature, providing a serene backdrop for those who appreciate the rugged beauty of the West. As a gateway to the sprawling Willmore Wilderness Park, it serves as a primary base for explorers looking to leave the paved roads behind and immerse themselves in a landscape dominated by towering peaks and crystal-clear waters.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 70 kilometers northwest of Hinton, AB, the journey to the park involves traveling along well-maintained gravel roads that cut through lush forests. The park sits at the edge of Rock Lake, a stunning body of water framed by the dramatic limestone cliffs of the front ranges. The surroundings are incredibly wild, often offering glimpses of native wildlife such as elk, deer, and occasionally grizzly or black bears. The elevation provides cool mountain air and a distinct alpine atmosphere that is refreshing during the summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

The facilities at Rock Lake cater to those seeking a rustic camping style. You will find unserviced campsites that offer plenty of space and privacy under the forest canopy. While there are no power or water hookups, the park provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Pit toilets and hand pumps for potable water access.
  • Individual fire pits and picnic tables at each campsite.
  • A functional boat launch and a dedicated fish cleaning station.

These features support a self-sufficient camping experience where the focus remains on the natural environment rather than modern distractions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake being home to mountain whitefish and lake trout, making it a favorite for anglers. Hikers and equestrians will find endless opportunities as the park serves as a major staging area for the Willmore Wilderness Park, offering trails that stretch deep into the backcountry. For a more relaxed afternoon, paddling along the shoreline provides a unique perspective of the mountain scenery. The proximity to Solomon Creek and various lookout points ensures that photographers and birdwatchers have plenty to document during their stay.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy off-grid living and don't mind the absence of traditional hookups. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts such as backcountry hikers, horse riders, and serious anglers who prioritize access to raw nature over resort-style amenities. If your travel style involves escaping the crowds found in nearby Jasper and seeking a quiet, authentic mountain retreat, Rock Lake Provincial Park is a perfect fit for your Alberta itinerary.

This place was a but confusing to find the sites, but once we figured it out, this place is great. There are so many trails, and the lake is beautiful. Highly recommend. Looking forward to the next visit.

Nice place for the price. It's a little primitive, but fine if you have a trailer. I was annoyed at the lack of info, so I went with the intention of correcting some of it. First...the road: It's totally FINE, and do not believe any reviews that say otherwise. Period. The facts...- its 32 km long. Speed limit is 60 km until the park..then 30KM to campground. It has a few good hills both up and down. The largest was a 7% grade. We had a 35 ft trailer loaded towed by f150 and were good. 4x4 is recommended if you're loaded due to SOME loose gravel. A few spots with a LITTLE wash board..4 seconds worth. Very few pot holes. 2 Notes: 1-make sure you bring cleaning supply...the road is dusty as hell, and you WILL be cleaning the inside of your trailer!! 2- There is one SMALL washout just before the bridge ( like a reverse speed bump) when you turn the corner and see the concrete bridge...hit the brakes!! Second ..the sites at Green Mountain Campground: No services! Has pumps for water, but it's not drinkable. Has pit toilets. In the bush...no real views. Has playground. Far enough apart for privacy. Fairly wide sites, majority are quite large/long. Our truck and trailer together is 58 feet.. and we still had room. NOTE: When looking at the online campground map for gm know that all the sites on the outside of the curve are on a hill, so you will be backing up an incline. Upper and lower Moose site are small and open and VERY close together. No privacy... but partial view of the lake. Hikers haven camp site is almost like a group site. Very small, zero privacy..inches between trailers. Equestrian sites are very open with corals and hitch posts. Walk-in tenting is available. Has fantastic trails starting at the river bridge that lead to the lake. A number of areas to launch kayaks, float tubes etc. You can fly fish in the river but fish are 6-8 in. Mostly bull trout. Lake views are amazing. Very dog friendly. Lastly..watch out for deer on the road...and bring a good axe they don't split most of their wood.

If you can snag a spot in hikers heaven the walk in spots looked amazing! I didnt manage and was in the green mountain loop which was also nice. There is a water pump but it is not filtered and says 'do not drink'. Heard the elk bugle through the night and took a hike around the lake in the morning. Highly recommend if in the area.

Tried out this campsite for the first time and we loved it! The campsites are very well treed and private, the free firewood burned great and it was quiet. Very nice views with the mountains nearby too.
