Rocky Arbor

Overview

Rocky Arbor State Park offers a peaceful retreat tucked away from the high-energy atmosphere of Wisconsin Dells. Established to protect the striking sandstone ledges and lush woodlands, this park provides a scenic backdrop for travelers seeking a quieter camping experience. It serves as an ideal base camp for those who want to explore the natural beauty of the region without sacrificing proximity to modern conveniences. The park’s unique landscape is a remnant of the ancient riverbeds that carved the Dells thousands of years ago.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles north of the main Dells strip, the park feels worlds away from the neon lights and bustling crowds. It is situated within a gorge featuring ancient rock formations and towering pine trees. The dense canopy provides excellent shade and privacy between sites, making it a refreshing escape during the humid summer months. The park is conveniently located right off Highway 12, making it an easy and accessible stop for passing RVers looking for a natural setting.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 89 sites, including 18 electric hookup sites specifically tailored for RV travelers. While it maintains a rustic atmosphere, visitors have access to modern conveniences such as:

  • Flush toilets and showers located within the campground loops.
  • A sanitary dump station and fresh water fill for RV maintenance.
  • A playground and picnic area for families.
  • A one-mile self-guided nature trail that showcases the area’s unique geology.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park itself is a haven for hiking and birdwatching along its rugged cliffs, it sits on the doorstep of the Waterpark Capital of the World. Within a ten-minute drive, visitors can access the famous river boat tours, theme parks, and entertainment venues of downtown Wisconsin Dells. Additionally, the nearby Mirror Lake State Park and Devil’s Lake State Park offer expanded opportunities for fishing and paddling for more active travelers looking to explore the water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best for RVers who prioritize natural scenery and quiet evenings over resort-style amenities like pools or laundry facilities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a budget-friendly home base near local attractions or couples seeking a secluded wooded setting. Travelers with smaller to mid-sized rigs will find the shaded campsites most comfortable, as the tight turns and dense trees provide a private experience that large commercial parks often lack.

A smaller State Park, but man what a great hiking trail and probably the most unique office of any of the parks! The main area offers restrooms, plenty of tables and grills, bubblers, a shelter, and a playground. The hiking trail is absolutely gorgeous! High rock formations on one side and beautiful marshland on the other. It's not an overly cumbersome hike, but you do need to watch your footing as there are many roots. I think we kicked and tripped on just about every root there walking while looking up at the rock formations, lol. There were so many weird swirls in the boulders. I suggest adding an informational sign about the creation of these unique patterns. There are two levels to the trail. I feel like the lower level has the better views, but the upper level is easier to traverse. The stairs at the far end are currently broken, so keep that in mind when visiting. Well worth visiting! Great hiking with great views, and a very nice park area.

A stable, mostly flat short loop with some pretty bluffs on the low side and one you make the turn, a straight trail through the woods. If you’re a serious hiker it’s not going to be a good time for you- if you are looking for a leisurely hike in nature- you’ll be pleased. Some of the rocks are nice and close and ready to climb without much danger- if you have younger kids who you want to have a bit of adventure.

This is our second time to this state park. We like the convenience of being able to slip away from the busy Dells to have a picnic lunch or stretch our legs. Therr is a nature trail that we did not utilize. The park doesnt have much, some swings, a slide (that was out of order) and a rock climbing wall, but it is enough to spark a little excitement. The true excitement came this last time when we found the coolest mushrooms and a little trail to a cave right behind the bathrooms.

Not much here. I drove in. Signs talking about ticks. A spot saying trails but didn't really look like much. I thought the trees 🌳 looked pretty sweet though. Never seen trees so thin so monstersly tall. After driving in. Looking around I left. Certainly didn't look like much to hike through. The rest of the park had spots for camping. This is right next to Wisconsin Dells so probably a cheaper alternative to hotels in the area.

This park is GREAT for camping, although it doesn’t really offer much else besides camping. When we hiked the one trail there, and it was not very maintained (it had grown in). If you are looking for a cheap place to stay near the Wisconsin Dells and are willing to camp, this is the place for you. We would camp there again if we wanted to camp very close to the Wisconsin Dells. We did like the park!
