Rocky Gap

Overview

Rocky Gap State Park offers a scenic mountain retreat nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Known for its centerpiece, the clear waters of Lake Habeeb, the park encompasses over 3,000 acres of diverse landscape. RVers will find a well-maintained campground that balances a rugged wilderness feel with essential modern conveniences. It is a destination where the quiet rustle of the forest meets the gentle lap of lake waves, providing a serene backdrop for those looking to disconnect and recharge in a natural setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located just off Interstate 68 in Flintstone, MD, the park is easily accessible for travelers crossing Western Maryland. The surrounding landscape is defined by the steep slopes of Evitts Mountain, which provides a dramatic ridgeline overlooking the valley. The park is characterized by dense hemlock forests and rhododendron thickets, creating a lush, secluded environment. Despite its proximity to the highway, the deep woods and expansive lakefront provide a sense of isolation from the hustle and bustle of the nearby urban corridors.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features several loops tailored to different camping styles, including many sites suitable for larger RVs. Notable amenities include electric hookups on select sites and convenient access to modern bathhouses with hot showers. Campers benefit from a dedicated private beach area, separate from the public day-use shores, allowing for a more quiet swimming experience. For those traveling with gear, the park offers a dump station and fresh water fill-ups. Families often appreciate the on-site camp store, which stocks firewood, ice, and basic supplies to ensure a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with miles of hiking and biking trails weaving through the forest. Lake Habeeb is a hub for activity, offering opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. For a change of pace, the adjacent resort area provides dining and a championship golf course within a short distance. A short drive away, visitors can explore the historic city of Cumberland or access the Great Allegheny Passage, a world-class rail-trail perfect for long-distance cycling and scenic walks through the Maryland mountains.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for nature lovers and families who enjoy water-based recreation and forest exploration. It suits RVers who prefer a state park atmosphere over a commercial resort, valuing space and natural scenery over extensive concrete pads. It is also a perfect stop for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a basecamp to explore Western Maryland’s rugged terrain. Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend of fishing or an active week of hiking, the park provides a versatile setting for travelers of all ages.

Maryland does a good job with their State Parks, roads in and out easy access, roads are in good condition, signs for info and directions . Campsites were well sized, you are not overlooked by neighbors. Electric and non electric sites with water throughout the loops, cabins also available. Bathhouses with showers and toilets, one bathroom stall handicap accessible. We had a great time. There is a lake and several hiking trails. + a casino at one end of the lake. Worth at least a 2-3 day visit. The lake offers 2 beaches, pavilions etc for a great day out. Also there is an Aviary, was not open for our stay.

It's been years since I have been here. (Many great memories with the boy scouts here.) It was a different and wonderful experience this time. The campsites are wonderful, maintained, and well covered by beautiful mother nature. There are nice paths and trails to walk. Do be aware of the immense amount of poison ivy. It is as close to two feet from some campsites. The waterfront beach area is so great. They have kayaks, canoes and row boats for rent. That's legit!! Nice, clean and graded sand. The views are spectacular. Especially if you are a photographer. The playground and playground area is ideal. There is nice shade as well from the trees. There are a few cool pavilions for use. You do have to reserve those. The store is extremely convenient. There's always that one item that you forget. Worry no more that store is clutch!

Rocky Gap Casino and Golf Resort is beautifully situated off I68. The property is gorgeous with a lake and surrounding forest. It would have been a perfect getaway except for a few things: 1) the outdoor speakers drowning out the sounds of nature, 2) the dirty windows blocking the beautiful scenery, and 3) the loud HVAC in the room that drowned out any silence while you were sleeping or the television or even talking... it was so LOUD. Otherwise, a visit here is totally worthwhile. Hopefully they will renovate soon and make the aforementioned corrections to make it the perfect place to visit for golfing, gambling, relaxing at the spa, getting a bite to eat, hiking, or just chilling by the lake.

Rocky Gap State Park is a great spot for a peaceful day outdoors. The park is very clean and well-maintained, with large restrooms that were spotless during our visit. There are plenty of stations to grill and relax, giving you lots of options depending on the size of your group. Parking is easy with a spacious and well-organized lot, and I really appreciated the dedicated trash storage—no need to carry bags home. There’s a wide range of activities available, whether you're looking to hike, enjoy the water, or just sit back and take in the scenery. It’s a great place to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with nature. Highly recommend for families, couples, or solo visits. Will definitely be coming back.

Always our favorite spot to camp. We’ve been camping at the same spot since I was a child (I’m 28 now with a husband and baby)!! We took our daughter camping for the first time and had so much fun. The bathrooms are always clean. There are family bathrooms for the kiddos. The staff are always kind and helpful. Never a bad thing to say!
