Rocky Mtn/Glacier Basin

Overview

Located at an elevation of approximately 8,500 feet within Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier Basin offers an authentic mountain experience. This campground is celebrated for its stunning views of the Continental Divide and its direct access to the park’s extensive trail system. Unlike commercial resorts, it provides a quiet, immersive environment where the natural landscape takes center stage. It serves as a primary hub for visitors looking to explore the high-alpine beauty of Colorado’s most famous national park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on Bear Lake Road, the park is surrounded by dense stands of lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, and Ponderosa pine. Some areas of the campground remain open and meadow-like due to past pine beetle activity, offering unobstructed mountain vistas. Its proximity to Estes Park ensures that while you are deep in nature, the conveniences of a mountain town are only a short drive away. The surrounding terrain is a mix of lush forests and rugged peaks, providing a true sense of wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional national park facility, Glacier Basin focuses on the essentials of outdoor living. It features no hookups, making it a destination for dry camping or those with self-contained RVs. Standard amenities include flush toilets, seasonal potable water, and a dump station for convenience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a bear-proof food locker. A standout feature is the shuttle bus stop, which allows campers to navigate the park without driving their large rigs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The campground is a perfect base for exploring the Bear Lake area, known for its iconic hiking trails to Emerald Lake and Sky Pond. Just a short distance away, Sprague Lake offers accessible walking paths and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for moose. Visitors can easily access Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved highway in the United States, which offers breathtaking views above the treeline. The nearby town of Estes Park provides shopping, dining, and additional recreational activities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize access to nature over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or electricity. It is a fantastic choice for hikers and photographers who want to be the first on the trails each morning. Because it accommodates various equipment sizes, it works well for both small camper vans and mid-sized RVs looking for a rustic escape. If you want to fall asleep to the sound of the wind through the pines and enjoy cool mountain nights, this is your spot.

If you haven't camped at Rocky Mountain National Park, do it! The park is incredible by itself, and this campground is a great spot. Our RV was in the shop for repairs so we decided to do a tent camping trip. The campsites have nice level pads for tents, a sturdy picnic table, and ample space. Everything is clean and all the facilities worked well. Wildlife (deer) visited our site several times. No bears or mountain lions (fortunately). Be aware there are no showers, so I wouldn't plan too many days here, but hey, it's the wilderness, enjoy it!

The campground itself is really nice. The location is great for the sadly little Rocky Mountain NP has to offer - it's right at the road to the extremely overcrowded/no chance to park almost anytime/nothing special Bear Lake. One ranger was so nice and helped us; others 's were normal and polite. One had absolutely nothing to do; he circled the campground in 10min intervals like some sort of prison guard until he made up something to pester you about. Seriously, there are national parks that desperately need rangers in the most precious areas, and here, there are so many rangers in a campground that some of them have nothing to do at all :(. In the end we left a couple of nights earlier and had a much better time in Utah and Idaho.

The campground is amazing, clean and most of all the unparalleled view above 8,500 ft. You can see the glaciers so close. Bathrooms are clean but no showers. Campsites have no water so you have to fill up in front of the ranger station. There is also a shuttle that comes to bring you to bear lake road and Estes Park. Highly recommends.

One of the best campgrounds in Rocky Mountain National Park. Beautiful mountain views, peaceful forest setting, and clean facilities. It’s well-organized with easy access to shuttle stops and hiking trails. Great spot for tent camping. Perfect base for exploring Bear Lake area and other scenic nearby.

Camped here for a few days and I would definitely camp here again. Stayed in C loop for tents only. Some sites had no trees but some did for some privacy - they had a lot of bathrooms in this loop where you really had them a close walking distance no matter where your site was. The bathrooms are in great shape. So clean. No trash cans inside though just so you know. There is a rinse sink in the bathroom area.
