Rogue River-Siskiyou/Sam Brown Campground
Overview
Sam Brown Campground offers a serene escape within the majestic **Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest**. This is a rustic, traditional Forest Service camping experience located approximately 25 miles from the city center of Grants Pass. It provides a peaceful retreat for travelers looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the lush, verdant landscapes of Southern Oregon. The park is characterized by its tranquility and its deep connection to the natural history of the region.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled along the banks of **Horse Creek**, the campground is surrounded by an impressive stand of old-growth fir and pine trees. The elevation and dense forest canopy provide a significantly cooler climate during the warm summer months compared to the valley floor. Travelers will find themselves deep in the heart of the **Siskiyou Mountains**, where the air is crisp and the sounds of urban life are replaced by the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant murmur of the water.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional National Forest facility, the amenities focus on providing the essentials for a successful dry camping trip. The park features include:
- **Vault toilets** maintained for cleanliness throughout the operating season.
- Potable water access points available during peak months.
- Individual sites equipped with a **heavy-duty picnic table** and a fire ring for evening gatherings.
While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the sites are designed to offer a sense of privacy and seclusion. The layout accommodates smaller RVs and trailers, providing a genuine **boondocking experience** under a dense canopy of trees that feels worlds away from a standard paved park.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the proximity to the **Wild and Scenic Rogue River**, which is world-renowned for its whitewater rafting, kayaking, and exceptional salmon fishing. Hikers can easily access the **Rainie Falls Trail**, a path that follows the river corridor and offers breathtaking views of the cascading water. For those interested in local history, the nearby historic mining sites and unique geological formations provide endless opportunities for exploration and discovery within the rugged Oregon wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is an ideal match for **self-contained RVers** who prioritize a direct connection with nature over luxury resort-style amenities. It is a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts, including avid hikers, mountain bikers, and nature photographers. If you are seeking a **quiet, primitive experience** where you can enjoy the solitude of the woods without the distractions of digital connectivity, Sam Brown Campground is a premier choice for your next Oregon adventure.

I actually stayed at Sam Brown (non-horse) campground across the road. You're supposed to have horses in order to stay at the horse camp! With that said, I like the campground very much. It was rustic and remote and provided good access to the Taylor Creek Trail system which was the reason I was there, to mountain bike. Pl there were several campgrounds. Mine was spacious and I think one of the nicest ones. There was firewood on site which was part of the reason I chose that camp site. Campground has no water and each campsite has a fire ring and a picnic table. There are pit toilets on site. Campers are expected to remove their own trash. The only thing I disliked about the campground was the fact that that on site was trashed perhaps occupied by a long-term camper. Also, the host campsite appeared to be occupied but there was no host on site. The trashed out camp was sad to see. There was a tent set up but then just a lot of miscellaneous garbage strewn around. After I got home I alerted the forest service so hopefully they'll take action. This campground had something I'd never seen before. I've stayed in many campgrounds. BLM, Forest Service, state parks, county parks, national parks, etc. The unusual thing was a structure for using a personal solar shower! It was set up like two shower stalls including a drain in the floor. But there was no plumbing. Rather there was a stout hook where one would hang one's solar shower. Neat idea, and as I said something I've never seen before!
