Rough River Lake - COE/Cave Creek

Overview

Cave Creek Campground is a standout destination managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the shores of Rough River Lake. Located in the rolling hills of central Kentucky, this park offers a serene escape for travelers who prioritize natural beauty over commercial glitz. The park is nestled on a wooded peninsula, providing most sites with a refreshing breeze and views of the sprawling 5,100-acre reservoir known for its clean water and recreational opportunities. It serves as a quiet retreat where the focus remains on the landscape and the water.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Falls of Rough, KY, the park is deeply embedded in the state's scenic heartland. The surrounding landscape is characterized by limestone cliffs and lush hardwood forests that transform into a vibrant canopy during the autumn months. Accessing the park involves navigating charming rural roads, leading you to a quiet peninsula where the sounds of the water replace the noise of the highway. It provides a perfect base for exploring the Pennyroyal region while offering a secluded feel that is hard to find at larger commercial resorts.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park leans toward a rustic experience, it provides essential comforts for modern RVers. Most sites feature electric and water hookups, though visitors should prepare to use the central dump station as there are no sewer connections at individual sites. On-site facilities include a boat ramp for easy lake access, a designated swimming beach, and a playground for children. The well-maintained bathhouses offer flush toilets and hot showers, ensuring a comfortable stay while remaining fully immersed in the great outdoors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the primary draw here, with fishing for hybrid striped bass and crappie being a local favorite. Just a short drive away, the Rough River Dam State Resort Park offers additional amenities, including a public golf course and a lodge with dining options. For those who prefer land over water, the area features several hiking trails that wind through the forest, offering glimpses of local wildlife and the historic Falls of Rough community, which is home to a historic grist mill and manor.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy a traditional camping atmosphere focused on lake life. It is particularly well-suited for boaters and anglers who want to be just steps away from the water. If you are a traveler looking for a quiet, budget-friendly location to disconnect and enjoy Kentucky’s natural scenery, Cave Creek is a perfect fit. It appeals most to those who appreciate a slower pace of travel and the simple pleasures of a lakeside campfire and a starry sky.

The hosts went above and beyond to accommodate our last minute camping trip (on Memorial weekend!!). Clean facilities. Most sites are near the water, convenient boat launch on site and and within walking distance.

We've lived nextdoor to this campground for years, and it's simply lovely. They seem to do routine maintenance and special calls in a timely manner. Everyone with whom I've dealt has been pleasant and helpful. Pretty much everything one could hope for.

Nice paved site. We were in the c loop of this small campground. If you mountain bike this is a great location. They have 3 levels of mountain bike trails that are well maintained. Unfortunately, there are no paved bike paths but the area is so rural that we used the backroads to get in a 25 mile ride. The lodge is an easy ride away. There is also another restaurant across from the airport. Be sure to check out the cave! The entrance is small but it opens up inside. The graffiti is a disappointment in the cave but I can’t blame the campground for that.

It was a great campground, wish I would of known that tents were on other side with grass, we had a site and had to make a lil river so the water could rush down hill we were almost flooded out, lots of pointy rocks for my dog, not really for kids, bathrooms with showers you have a code, you have to press the button on the door. But the timer goes off in 25 minutes so what ever your doing you have to press the button on the door again, very inconvenient specially if ur on toilet or in the middle of a shower, the place to susposly swim you have to look for the lil path that goes down a steep hill, that is FULL OF TICKS... AND PRICKLY BUSHES, POISON IVY, our campsite we broke many metal tent sticks, the ground is super hard "clay" it's a very quiet campground, far from gas stations stores, ITs a dry county so can't buy alcohol, the manager or volunteer lady charlie was a sweet lady!!!! Wish we would of known that ALOT of the campsites were empty when I was told and showed on site that half of the sites were not available!!
