Routt/Dumont Lake

Overview

Nestled within the breathtaking Routt National Forest, Dumont Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude escape near the summit of Rabbit Ears Pass. This seasonal destination is perfect for travelers seeking a deep connection with the Colorado wilderness. At over 9,500 feet in elevation, the air is crisp, and the scenery is dominated by lush alpine meadows and shimmering waters. It provides a peaceful retreat for those who prefer the sounds of nature over the hum of a crowded commercial resort.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated just southeast of Steamboat Springs, providing easy access from Highway 40 while maintaining a sense of profound seclusion. Surrounded by the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests, the landscape transforms throughout the summer, beginning with vibrant wildflower displays and ending with golden aspens. The proximity to Dumont Lake allows for stunning water views, while the rugged terrain of the Continental Divide serves as a dramatic backdrop for every campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic forest service site, the amenities here focus on the essentials of outdoor living. Visitors will find vault toilets and potable water available during the peak season, though there are no electric or sewer hookups. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, making it ideal for traditional campfire cooking. The sites are spaced to provide privacy, accommodating a variety of RV lengths while maintaining the integrity of the natural forest floor.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless recreation right at their doorstep. The lake itself is restricted to non-motorized craft, making it a serene spot for paddling and trout fishing. Hikers and mountain bikers can easily access the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, which offers miles of challenging terrain and panoramic vistas. For a change of pace, the vibrant shops and world-class hot springs of Steamboat Springs are only a short, scenic drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and prioritize natural beauty over modern luxuries. It is a haven for avid hikers and photographers looking to capture the raw essence of the Rocky Mountains. Pretty good sized trout, didn’t think i would catch anything but surprised myself with a few 18” rainbows that were super thick C&R

I stayed at the campground a couple times. Great place to stay with nice lake to fish. Steamboat not far and plenty of hiking trails around

Campground was beautiful and Rusty. The host is super friendly. Rating it a 4 because the bug situation was out of control at the campground, but over at the lakeside was wonderful.

Very large and spacious spots! Some have no shade though, be prepared for that on those hot midsummer days. We honestly felt like we were more remote than some dispersed camping spots. Right next to hiking trails and walking distance from the lake (though a bit of a trek if you want to bring a SUP or kayak, I opted to drive to the picnic area). Basic pit toilets were clean enough, had TP and hand sanitizer. Never used the water pump but it exists. While we were there the wildflowers were out in full force and it was incredible. We were not super prepared for the amount of bugs though, be prepared for that. Had a great time, hope to come back for a longer weekend sometime, just a great area!

Who can complain at $12 a night? The campsites are spread out nicely, the views are magnificent, and it's right by the trailhead to rabbit ears. However, it is June with a lot of standing water so bring bug spray! The water pumps are not working yet as of June 30, so be prepared.
