Routt/Freeman

Overview

Freeman Campground, nestled within the Routt National Forest north of Craig, Colorado, offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a rustic experience. Situated near the picturesque Freeman Reservoir, this high-altitude destination sits at over 9,200 feet, surrounded by groves of aspen and evergreen trees. It is a traditional forest service site that emphasizes peace and quiet over modern luxuries, providing a true mountain retreat for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature during the summer and early fall months.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located approximately 25 miles north of Craig, accessible via a scenic drive that leads into the heart of the Bears Ears Ranger District. As the elevation climbs, the landscape transforms from high desert plains into lush mountain terrain. Visitors will find themselves in a secluded environment characterized by rolling hills and dense forests. The centerpiece of the area is the Freeman Reservoir, which provides a cooling breeze and a scenic focal point for the entire campground area, especially during the peak of July and August.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive Forest Service facility, Freeman focuses on essential needs rather than resort-style comforts. The site offers 18 cleared campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings for traditional evening campfires. While there are no electrical or water hookups, guests have access to vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water. The sites are generally best suited for smaller RVs, vans, or truck campers. It is important to note that this is a pack-in, pack-out facility, meaning no trash service is provided on-site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the reservoir, which is a local favorite for trout fishing and non-motorized boating, such as canoeing or kayaking. Hikers can explore several nearby forest service trails that offer sweeping views of the Colorado wilderness and excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. During the autumn, the area becomes a popular hub for big game hunting and viewing the vibrant gold of the changing aspen leaves. For a touch of history, the nearby town of Craig features the Museum of Northwest Colorado.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who prioritize scenery and seclusion above all else. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of the forest and waking up steps away from a mountain lake, this is an excellent choice. It is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who come prepared with their own power and supplies. Because of the winding mountain access roads and modest site pads, it is better suited for those with smaller trailers or nimble campers rather than large luxury motorhomes.

The Freeman Reservoir Campground is located within the Medicine-Bow Routt National Forest. This area is a well used by hunters, hikers, and campers. There is a small day fee to park or camp here. I've seen people fishing at the reservoir. There are many trails and beautiful views near. The fall is incredible out here. There are many beautiful aspen trees.
