Salmonberry Campground (Benton County Park)

Overview

Salmonberry Campground offers a serene, back-to-basics escape at the scenic confluence of the Alsea River and the South Fork Alsea River. This Benton County park serves as a secluded sanctuary for travelers looking to distance themselves from the noise of modern life. With a small number of sites tucked away in a lush, deeply wooded environment, the park provides an intimate atmosphere where the soothing sounds of the flowing water define the experience. It is a place where nature takes center stage, offering a cooling breeze and a slow-paced lifestyle.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled deep within the Oregon Coast Range near the small community of Alsea, the park is surrounded by towering Douglas firs and dense ferns. The journey to the campground involves a beautiful drive through mossy forests and along winding riverbanks that showcase the rural beauty of western Oregon. It acts as a natural cooling station, offering a shaded, temperate retreat even during the height of the summer season. The surrounding wilderness is home to diverse wildlife and provides a verdant backdrop for every campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

As a dedicated rustic destination, Salmonberry Campground focuses on providing a primitive nature experience rather than a resort feel. The park features vault toilets and seasonal potable water, though it is important to note there are no electrical hookups or shower facilities. Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy fire ring and picnic table, making it a favorite for self-contained RVers. Essential features include:

  • Access to riverfront fishing spots directly from the park
  • Quiet, shaded sites designed for smaller rigs and vans
  • Proximity to local hiking and water trails

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the exceptional river fishing for steelhead and salmon, with easy access points right from the campground boundary. Beyond the water, guests often take the short drive to explore Alsea Falls and McBee Park, which feature impressive cascades and family-friendly hiking trails through the forest. Bird watching is also popular here, as the riparian habitat attracts a variety of local species. For a higher perspective, a trip to nearby Marys Peak offers breathtaking views stretching from the Willamette Valley to the Pacific Ocean.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for dedicated anglers and nature enthusiasts who value solitude and proximity to the water over luxury amenities. Because there is very limited cell service in the canyon, it is a perfect destination for travelers looking to completely unplug and recharge in the outdoors. It is most suitable for minimalist RVers with smaller rigs or camper vans who are prepared for a quiet, self-sufficient stay in one of Oregon's most peaceful and picturesque river corridors.

Nice small campground with river access. Water was low so we did not launch our kayak. Others did, including kids. Close to hiking trails and downtown, where you can grab supplies. Best of all was the camp host, Carol, she is friendly and funny! We will be back.

We stopped here during our bike packing trip around Oregon. This was my favorite campsite of the trip. It's nice and secluded, very wooded, and the river runs adjacent. I took a quick wade in the clear water! Carole the camp host was so wonderful!

Beautiful little campground! Rv & tent spots, a yurt, and cabin are all available for a decent price. Camp hosts were amazing, and the bathrooms and showers were kept clean and tidy.

Mostly a campground for RVs but a few sites tucked in the back are good for tent camping. I'd recommend sites 13, 14, and 15 in that order for tent camping (the 3 sites are close together and are shown in the picture with 13 on the right, 14 middle, and 15 left). Sites have benches and firepits. Potable well water is available (couldn't find this info online). I imagine this campground will usually have openings due to the nightly cost being quite high, $40/night. I probably won't go back but enjoyed my time there.

Village camping ~ (mid summer 2021) We got lucky and were able to get a site from a no-show reservation. We paid $25 for our site. The campsite feels similar to a park with a oval map with a large grass field in the center. The sites were pretty close together but we made friends with our camping neighbors. The restrooms were very clean! Showers are available with quarter operation. We bought fire wood from the camp host. In the morning we see the for a swim in the river. The water was perfect temperature and fairly clean!
