Sam Dale Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area
Overview
Located in the heart of southeastern Illinois, Sam Dale Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area offers a serene escape for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature. Spanning over 1,300 acres, this state-managed destination is centered around a picturesque 194-acre lake designed specifically for fishing and quiet recreation. The atmosphere is decidedly rustic and peaceful, providing a slow-paced environment where the sounds of the wind through the hardwoods replace the noise of the highway. It is a quintessential Midwestern retreat for those who value public lands and outdoor heritage.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated just outside Johnsonville, IL, nestled within the rolling landscape of Wayne County. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by a mix of dense oak-hickory forests and open meadows that showcase the seasonal beauty of the Illinois countryside. Because it is tucked away from major metropolitan hubs, the area benefits from exceptionally dark night skies, making it a fantastic spot for stargazing from your campsite after the sun sets over the water. The surrounding rural roads offer a pleasant, scenic drive for those arriving by RV.
Amenities & Park Features
RV travelers can enjoy well-maintained Class A camping sites that include electrical hookups to keep your rig powered throughout your stay. While the park maintains a natural and rugged feel, it provides essential conveniences such as a sanitary dump station and frost-free water hydrants located conveniently throughout the grounds. For those bringing watercraft, multiple boat launch ramps are available, though a 10-horsepower limit on the lake ensures the water remains tranquil. You will also find various picnic shelters and a playground, making the park comfortable for families.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is the primary draw here, with the lake regularly stocked with bluegill, channel catfish, and largemouth bass. Beyond the water, visitors can explore miles of multi-use trails that wind through the timber, perfect for hiking, horseback riding, or birdwatching. For those interested in regional history or local flavor, the nearby city of Flora offers unique shops and dining, while the Wayne County scenery provides endless opportunities for wildlife photography, especially during the vibrant autumn foliage season when the maples and oaks turn brilliant shades of orange and red.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded setting over a high-traffic commercial resort. It is a true haven for anglers and hunters who appreciate well-managed public lands and a peaceful home base to return to each evening. Families looking to unplug from digital distractions and spend quality time around a campfire will find the tranquil atmosphere of Sam Dale Lake perfectly suited to their needs, offering a classic Illinois camping experience characterized by simplicity and natural beauty.

Park is very well maintained. The grass had been recently cut, so bugs were minimal and it looked great. I tent camped and was right next to the water with a great view. It was cool being up close to so many turkey vultures roosting. Camp hostess was friendly, organized, and knowledgeable. Plan to go back when it cools off.

The camp ground was nice. The sites were kind of unlevel so bring lots of blocks for your camper. There's no shower house that we saw, fortunately we have one in our camper. The park areas were well kept. The bass fishing was tough, Not a lot of drop offs or cover. Very beautiful lake/area though.
