Sam Houston/Stubblefield Lake
Overview
Nestled within the dense canopy of the Sam Houston National Forest, the Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape for RVers seeking a deep connection with nature. This park is not a high-traffic resort but rather a serene retreat where the sounds of the wind through the pines and the calls of local waterfowl set the pace. Located on the northern end of Lake Conroe, it provides a rustic atmosphere that feels miles away from the bustle of modern life, despite its accessibility from nearby Huntsville.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated along the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, where it widens into Stubblefield Lake. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills and thick stands of loblolly pine and hardwoods. Travelers will appreciate the secluded feel of the forest, which creates a natural buffer against noise. Its location in Huntsville, TX, places it at a convenient gateway to the recreational opportunities of the larger Sam Houston National Forest while remaining close enough to local services for supplies.
Amenities & Park Features
Stubblefield Lake features roughly 28 campsites designed to accommodate smaller RVs and trailers. Unlike more developed parks, the focus here is on essential services and the outdoor experience. The park provides basic facilities for visitors, including:
- Access to electric and water hookups at selected campsites.
- Individual picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings for evening campfires.
- Accessible vault toilets and bathhouse facilities located within the loop.
- A nearby boat ramp providing easy access for kayaks and canoes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
One of the primary draws for visitors is the Lone Star Hiking Trail, a massive trail system that passes directly through the area, offering miles of exploration for hikers and backpackers. Fishing is another popular pastime, with the lake providing ample opportunities to catch catfish and bass. For those interested in local history, the city of Huntsville is a short drive away, where you can visit the Sam Houston Memorial Museum or see the iconic 67-foot statue of the Texas legend.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who prefer a quiet, wooded environment over a social resort setting. It is best suited for those with smaller rigs or camper vans who value peace and quiet and do not mind a more rustic camping experience. If your goal is to spend your days hiking, paddling, or wildlife viewing, Stubblefield Lake provides the perfect home base for an authentic and restorative Texas forest adventure.

Rode my motorcycle to the campground to check it out. Got Very RUDELY asked to leave the federal campground.... The skinny wannabe cop, golfcart riding guy that runs the park. You are the reason why this campground will be at the bottom of the list. I will never go to this campground. I'd give it a 0/10.Dont waste your time and money here.

🌲 Bigfoot, Barbecue, and Bravery: A 5-Star Adventure at Stubblefield Lake 🌲 We spent Memorial Day weekend at Stubblefield Lake Campground on what can only be described as a primitive expedition of legendary proportions. This wasn’t just any camping trip — it was our high school graduation gift to my little brother: a chance to relax, reconnect with nature, and hunt Bigfoot. (Priorities.) Now, let’s set the scene: calm, peaceful campsite, tucked into the forest, just far enough from civilization that your cell signal gives up — but close enough to nature that something was definitely watching us. (More on that later.) As tradition demands, no great expedition is complete without a feast. Cue my wife — the true MVP — who, in the middle of a severe thunderstorm, fired up the pit and cooked the best ribs known to mankind. Lightning flashing, thunder rolling, and there she was, unfazed, flipping ribs like a backyard superhero. Gordon Ramsay could never. Later that night, the real excitement began. Deep in the dark woods, we spotted a pair of glowing eyes and discovered footprints that were way too big to belong to any of us — unless my brother had a sudden growth spurt into size 25 shoes overnight. We didn’t see Bigfoot, but I’d bet a full rack of ribs he saw us. Between the peaceful lake, the eerie nighttime adventures, and some of the best ribs this side of the Mississippi (rain or shine), Stubblefield Lake gave us a weekend we’ll never forget. If you’re looking for a calm place to relax and a chance to make history, pack your tent — and your sense of humor — and get out there. Would rate it 6/5 stars if Bigfoot had joined us for dinner.

Camping grounds clean, good camp host, bathrooms fine. Get a good spot and you can catch fish without even leaving your campsite. I have caught some nice 2-3 pound bass here regularly. Also catch crappie good eatin size but the catfish are finicky. Lots of bank fishing and kayak opportunities and also a boat ramp. Its close to hunting and off road areas

Stubblefield is a great place for those fanatics of camping. The sites are spacious with BBQ grill, picnic table and a nice sand pad to set up your tent. Park fee is 15.00. There are many trails that are easily accessible. Restrooms are well kept. Plenty of fresh air and nature to enjoy. Also, dont forget to pack a fishing rod and tackle. Whatever activity you decide to do this is just the right mixed of everything

Stayed 1 night here while hiking the Lone Star Hiking Trail. The campsites are well laid out for a small campground. The campsites have designated tent areas, fire rings, picnic tables, and water. There's bathrooms with showers available for use. The hosts were super nice and helpful. Loved the views of the water from my tent. Would definitely stay here again.
