San Bernardino/South Fork
Overview
San Bernardino/South Fork Campground offers a serene, high-elevation retreat tucked away in the San Bernardino National Forest. Located at approximately 6,200 feet in elevation, this seasonal campground provides a refreshing escape from the heat of the valley. It is a traditional forest service site that emphasizes a connection with nature rather than resort-style luxuries. Visitors are treated to a lush environment shaded by towering pines and oaks, creating a quintessential mountain camping experience.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the small community of Angelus Oaks, CA, the park is positioned along the scenic State Highway 38. The surroundings are defined by the Santa Ana River and the rugged terrain of the San Bernardino Mountains. The location serves as a primary gateway to the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a dense forest canopy, with the crisp mountain air and the sound of the nearby river providing a tranquil backdrop for their stay.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination focused on dry camping, meaning there are no hookups available for RVs. The park features paved spurs, but most sites are better suited for smaller rigs or camper vans due to size limitations. On-site amenities are basic but well-maintained, including vault toilets and access to potable water during the peak season. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, encouraging traditional outdoor living and evening campfires under the stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the immediate access to the South Fork Trail, one of the most popular routes into the San Gorgonio Wilderness for hikers and backpackers. For those who prefer water activities, Jenks Lake is located just a short drive away, offering opportunities for fishing and lakeside picnicking. The surrounding forest is also a haven for birdwatching and photography, with many trails providing stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks and alpine meadows.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and self-contained RVers who value solitude and proximity to trailheads over modern convenience. It is perfect for those seeking a rugged experience with the security of a managed campground. Because of the size constraints, it is best suited for small trailers and camper vans. If you are looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the wilderness, this high-country destination provides the perfect setting for a mountain adventure.

It was devastated in 2023. The floods destroyed this area. It's still very beautiful, but the fishing won't return for several years.

One of my favorite areas. Seasonal! 5/6 to 9/24. $26/night + $8 for each additional car. To the best of my memory: ~30 campsites, first come first serve, One of the camp spots has a tiny tributary trickling through it I like to hang my hammock over! There are restrooms(stinky honey hole), a water spicket(by the restroom) fire pit for each camp. Pix are from across hwy.

Very quiet and peaceful. Running creeks near by. Plenty of trail heads and beauty.
