San Juan/Cayton

Overview

Cayton Campground, frequently referred to as San Juan/Cayton, offers a quintessential Colorado mountain experience at an elevation of 9,400 feet. Tucked away in the San Juan National Forest along the upper Dolores River, this destination provides a serene escape for travelers who prioritize nature over resort-style luxuries. The air is crisp, the nights are cool, and the scenery is defined by spruce-fir forests and wildflower-filled meadows, making it a premier choice for those seeking high-altitude tranquility and a genuine connection to the outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately six miles northeast of the historic town of Rico, the campground sits right off the San Juan Skyway, one of America's most scenic byways. This location serves as a gateway to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the West. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by the jagged peaks of the San Juan Mountains and the gentle flow of the Dolores River, which runs directly alongside the camping area. It is a world away from the hustle of city life, offering a remote feel while remaining accessible via well-maintained paved roads.

Amenities & Park Features

While this is a National Forest campground, it offers more conveniences than many rustic sites. The park is designed to balance the rugged outdoors with essential comforts, making it a standout for forest service camping:

  • Electric hookups are available at select sites, a rare and welcome feature for RVers in this region.
  • Access to potable water and well-maintained vault toilets are provided throughout the campground loops.
  • Spacious sites include heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings for traditional evening campfires.

While there are no sewer hookups or on-site showers, the natural spacing between sites and the proximity to the river create a high-quality experience for those prepared for a mix of dry camping and utility support.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far from your doorstep here. Anglers will appreciate the easy access to fishing on the Dolores River, which is well-known for its trout populations. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore the Bear Creek Trail, which offers stunning alpine vistas and challenging terrain nearby. Just a short drive away is Lizard Head Pass, providing iconic views and further trailheads. For a touch of local history, the town of Rico offers a charming glimpse into Colorado's mining past, while the world-class amenities of Telluride are just a scenic drive over the pass.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for nature enthusiasts and photographers who want to wake up in the heart of the wilderness. It is best suited for small to medium-sized RVs and trailers, as the high mountain terrain and park layout can be tight for the largest motorhomes. If you enjoy boondocking with a safety net of electricity and appreciate a quieter, more isolated atmosphere compared to crowded commercial parks, Cayton is a perfect fit for your high-country Colorado road trip.

We're in the middle of a three week camping trip through Colorado. With only a couple of days left in the trip, this campground has been the highlight. Beautiful location convenient to Telluride. But the best thing was the Camp Hosts. Dale & Sharon were very nice and cared about the campground. It was immaculate. Dale was always out making sure the place was clean and presentable. Small American Flags were on each site post. Nice touch. Hats off to the Hosts for their dedication. Nice to see such caring folks still exist in this day and time.

Campground is Beautiful. The camp hosts take great pride in keeping everything clean and pristine. Will defiantly return in the future. We had site 1 and enjoyed it. Stayed Aug 2025

This campground is so amazing. On the upper loop there is no electricity, but plenty of sun if you’ve got Solar. On the lower loop you got electricity and water and lots of shade. The most important thing is having a great campground host. I can assure you, Dale and Sharon are the very best I’ve ever seen!

Nice CG but in a narrow canyon next to hwy #145 so some hwy noise. Two loops, loop A has 20 sites and is the electric water hookup loop for larger RVs and TTs. Loop B is has 7 sites with several FCFS and has no hookups. CG has vault toilets, dumpster, water spigots and an onsite CG host. Low price on loop B (non electric) would be $13 senior. Note that there is NO cell signal here at least for my TMobile phone. UPDATE 8-2025: fees increased to $30 for nonelectric and $41 for electric sites. Crazy high rates IMHO. Changed to three stars from 4 stars due to excessive fees.

Highly recommend this campground, located right on the river, just 20 minutes from Telluride. There are both electric and non-electric sites, as well as some pull-through sites available. Sharon and Dale, the camp hosts, are amazing. I can not thank them enough for being so helpful and friendly. They are the best camp hosts we have ever met. We hope to see you both next year.
