San Juan/Cimarrona
Overview
Cimarrona Campground offers a tranquil escape within the San Juan National Forest, located just a short drive from the bustling mountain town of Pagosa Springs. This destination is defined by its high-altitude serenity and immediate access to the Weminuche Wilderness. It serves as a gateway for travelers seeking a deep connection with the Colorado wilderness, providing a peaceful environment far from the noise of traditional highway-side RV parks. The site is a favorite for those who value natural landscapes over resort-style commercialization.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at an elevation of approximately 8,400 feet, the campground is surrounded by a lush forest of mixed conifers and aspens. The landscape is dominated by the nearby Williams Creek Reservoir, which provides stunning water views against a backdrop of rugged mountain peaks. Travelers will navigate scenic forest roads to reach this secluded spot, where the cool mountain air and dark night skies offer a refreshing change of pace from lower elevations. The surrounding terrain is diverse, featuring rolling meadows and dense timber.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic Forest Service facility, the park focuses on a natural experience rather than modern luxury. It features vault toilets and seasonal potable water, though visitors should arrive prepared for dry camping as there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for traditional campfire cooking. The sites are generally back-in and are best suited for smaller to mid-sized RVs, campers, and vans looking for an authentic forest stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for those staying in this region. Visitors can enjoy fishing and non-motorized boating at Williams Creek Reservoir, which is located just a mile away. For avid hikers, the Cimarrona Trail begins right at the campground, leading adventurers deep into the high country for spectacular vistas. After a day of exploring the trails, many travelers make the drive back into Pagosa Springs to soak in the world-famous Great Pagosa Hot Springs or explore local mountain dining options.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for boondockers and nature enthusiasts who prioritize scenery and solitude over resort-style amenities. If you enjoy waking up to the sound of wind through the pines and prefer a secluded mountain atmosphere, Cimarrona is a perfect fit. It is best suited for travelers with self-contained rigs who are eager to explore the backcountry, disconnect from the digital world, and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Amazing campsite, stunning views, feels like you're on a TV or movie set from Gunsmoke or Little House On The Prarie, definitely worth the drive!

I love this campground. It is very beautiful and even though it is a little way away from the lake you have a fantastic view of it. The campground host did a great job keeping everything clean and in order.

This campground is a gem. Beautiful vistas and the smell of sugar pine and lots of Aspens. The vault toilets are super clean, and the current hosts David and Pam are very nice. The portable water pump had very good tasting drinking water, and you are surrounded by fantastic hiking trails. Absolutely loved it.

The only campsite open for Autumn camping. Beautiful aspens, a creek, hiking, a reservoir right down the road for fishing and wading and beautiful views makes this site a great option for those hoping to camp past mid September.

One of the best campgrounds I’ve stayed in CO. Gorgeous views and great access to nearby hikes. The campground itself offered private sites, clean/fresh bathrooms, and GREAT drinking water. The campground is worth the trip from Pagosa.
