San Juan/East Fork
Overview
San Juan/East Fork is a quintessential mountain escape located just east of Pagosa Springs. Tucked away along the East Fork of the San Juan River, this park offers a rustic experience that prioritizes nature over luxury amenities. It is managed within the San Juan National Forest, providing travelers with an authentic high-country atmosphere. The air is crisp, and the scenery is dominated by towering pines and the gentle rush of the river, making it a peaceful basecamp for exploring southwest Colorado.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 11 miles northeast of downtown Pagosa Springs, the park sits at an elevation of roughly 7,700 feet. It is positioned near the base of Wolf Creek Pass, a gateway to some of the most dramatic vistas in the state. The park is surrounded by vast expanses of public land, offering a secluded feel while remaining accessible via Highway 160. The East Fork River winds through the area, providing a scenic backdrop for every campsite and a natural soundtrack for your stay.
Amenities & Park Features
The park focuses on providing a functional and natural environment for RVers. While it lacks the glitzy facilities of a resort, it offers spacious sites that can accommodate various rig sizes. Most sites include picnic tables and fire rings for traditional campouts. Essential services typically include electrical hookups and access to potable water. Because the park is nestled in the forest, visitors should prepare for limited cell service, which enhances the feeling of truly unplugging from the modern world.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities. The river is a popular spot for fly fishing, with many travelers casting lines right from their sites. For those looking to soak, the world-famous Great Pagosa Hot Springs are a short drive away. Hikers and off-roaders can explore the nearby East Fork Road, which leads deep into the mountains toward the Continental Divide. Additionally, the proximity to the pass makes it a great summer hiking hub for all skill levels.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who value solitude and scenery over community rooms and paved pads. It suits those with a sense of adventure who want to be steps away from wilderness trails and riverbanks. Families who enjoy fishing and campfire stories will find it perfect, as will solo travelers seeking a quiet retreat. If your travel style involves mountain exploration and a desire to connect with the rugged beauty of Colorado, this is your destination.

Stayed almost a week in Aug, nice break from our TX heat. Our spot for our camper was quite uneven and tiny, but can't complain with how beautiful our view was.

Jude, host, was super nice and helpful. We enjoyed our stay. The mosquitos were pretty fierce but WalMart deet-free repellent kept them at bay. Beautiful area.

A nice little somewhat secluded, but easily accessible campground about 10 miles northeast of Pagosa Springs. There is a Forest Service Road (gravel) that you take after getting off Hwy 160 for about a mile until you hit the campground. There are about 25 sites available, some overlooking the East Fork if the Sån Juan River. Many are well screened with picnic table and fire ring. Wood bundles are available from the campground høst for $10. I think the høst was named Jude and he was a gem. Sites were blown clean of debris and needles from the large Ponderosa Pines in the area. Although the restrooms didn't smell the best, they were clean. There were numerous paths down to the River as well. Would definitely stay here again. Made the reservations on recreation.gov. Have no issues with the $32 for the site, but the $8 reservation fee is getting out of hånd. If this would go back to the government or for improvements at the site, that would be fine However, I am pretty sure that all just goes to the vendor.

Back-in and pull-beside sites with picnic tables and fire rings. Many sites are close to the canyon where the river runs, so one can hear the river below all the time. Lovely park! The road from US-160 to the campground entrance is mostly washboard.

Very nice little campground, just outside of Pagosa Springs, with the East Fork of the San Juan River running just behind it. Not too big, great tent sites.
