San Juan/Pine Point

Overview

Located along the eastern shores of the stunning Vallecito Reservoir, San Juan and Pine Point campgrounds offer a serene escape into the heart of the San Juan National Forest. These neighboring sites provide a rustic camping experience surrounded by towering Ponderosa pines and dramatic mountain vistas. Travelers seeking a quiet retreat will find these campgrounds ideal for reconnecting with nature while enjoying proximity to one of Colorado’s most beautiful high-altitude bodies of water. The atmosphere is tranquil, making it a premier choice for those looking to avoid the crowds of more developed commercial parks.

Location & Surroundings

Situated about 18 miles northeast of Bayfield, the campgrounds sit at a refreshing elevation of roughly 8,000 feet. The landscape is defined by the expansive Vallecito Lake and the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the surrounding mountains. The area serves as a gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness, offering a lush environment where wildlife such as elk, deer, and bald eagles are frequently spotted. The scent of pine needles and the cool mountain air create a refreshing environment that provides a welcome reprieve from the summer heat found in lower elevations.

Amenities & Park Features

As traditional National Forest sites, San Juan and Pine Point focus on the essentials of outdoor living rather than modern luxuries. The park features include:

  • Spacious sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Access to vault toilets and centrally located potable water spigots.
  • Select sites with direct shoreline access for easy water entry.
  • Generous spacing between campsites to ensure guest privacy.

While these locations do not offer electricity or sewer hookups, they provide a peaceful environment that caters to self-contained RVs. The natural shade provided by the dense forest canopy helps keep rigs cool throughout the day.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary attraction is undoubtedly Vallecito Lake, where visitors can engage in motorized boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Anglers frequent these waters specifically to hunt for trophy-sized northern pike and various trout species. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Pine River Trail provides a scenic route into the backcountry for hikers and horseback riders. Additionally, the historic town of Durango is just a short drive away, offering access to the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and diverse local dining options.

Who This Park Is Best For

These campgrounds are best suited for dry campers and nature enthusiasts who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect match for families who enjoy fishing and hiking, as well as photographers looking to capture the raw alpine beauty of Southwest Colorado. If you travel in a self-contained rig and value a peaceful, forested environment, San Juan and Pine Point offer an authentic mountain experience that serves as a perfect basecamp for exploring the high country.

This place was exceptionally well maintained the views are fantastic and the fishing when you do catch something it's worth the catch. Even though the bathrooms were outhouses, they did not smell like your normal outhouses in other parks. In fact they smell better than most restrooms you can find in restaurants and businesses.

Just spent 3 nights at this campground. Beautiful, clean, fairly private sites. Hosts were excellent. Water access was great even from non-waterfront sites. Restrooms were cleanest we've ever encountered. Only peculiar thing is the National Forest Service's online reservation system; showed nearly all sites reserved, but only about a 3rd were when we got there; many showed open and FF. which is not noted on the reservation site. Hope they can improve that.

Lovely campground with great camp hosts. Nicely wooded and shady. Campsites don't have electricity or water. Water is available in many parts of camp. Cell phone service for AT&T is very sketchy and Verizon is not available

Such a great campground! It is very close to the reservoir, secluded but close to the road and the hosts were fantastic! They helped us with some last minute changes to our reservations and came by to check on the guests frequently bringing treats for our pup!
