San Juan/Teal

Overview

The San Juan/Teal campground area offers a serene escape within the San Juan National Forest, sitting at an elevation of roughly 8,200 feet. This destination is less about luxury amenities and more about total immersion in the Colorado wilderness. Situated alongside the scenic Williams Creek Reservoir, the park provides a tranquil atmosphere where the sound of the wind through the ponderosa pines takes center stage. It is a premier location for those looking to reconnect with nature in a quiet setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 26 miles north of Pagosa Springs, the drive to the San Juan/Teal sites takes you deep into the heart of the San Juan Mountains. The surrounding landscape is dominated by rugged peaks and dense forests of fir and aspen. The primary draw is the massive Williams Creek Reservoir, which mirrors the mountain skyline on calm mornings. Because of its remote location, travelers should expect limited cell service and a peaceful disconnect from the modern world.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service destination, San Juan/Teal focuses on dry camping experiences without water, sewer, or electric hookups. The park provides essential facilities to ensure a functional stay while maintaining a primitive feel:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water pumps.
  • Individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Level parking spurs suitable for various RV lengths.

While the sites are rustic, many are spacious enough to accommodate large RVs and trailers, though maneuvering requires careful navigation on the gravel access roads. Visitors should plan to be fully self-contained for power and waste.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The reservoir is a hotspot for non-motorized boating and fishing for kokanee salmon and mountain trout. Hikers will find paradise with nearby access to the Weminuche Wilderness and trails leading into the Piedra Area. For those willing to drive back toward town, the world-famous Great Pagosa Hot Springs offers a relaxing soak. The surrounding forest roads also provide endless opportunities for wildlife viewing, including elk and mule deer in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

The San Juan/Teal campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer mountain views over resort-style clubhouses. It is a perfect match for anglers and kayakers who want immediate access to the water. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping but appreciate the structure of a designated site, this location offers the best of both worlds. It is an excellent choice for travelers who value quiet nights and star-filled skies over modern connectivity.

We went to The Rose for a delightful local breakfast and decided to walk for a bit. We found this delightful family owned shop called San Juan lifestyles. This is an experience. It’s not just shopping. You get to enjoy the smiles while browsing their wonderful quality products from small gifts, chocolate’s, stickers, hats, T-shirts, and so much more. The Best take away though is the wonderful conversations you will have with the owners And family in this shop! This is a must visit in Pagosa. Check out my new T-shirt.

Went in for the first time yesterday around lunch time. Very unfriendly person (Andrea) working, making rude comments and very unwelcoming. Will not be back.

The worker at the store was unbelievably rude. Commented that we better by buying the toy that my 2 year old was carrying around. Not a kid friendly store, even though they carry children’s toys. Sad I had to give this store money.
