San Juan/West Dolores is a tranquil retreat situated deep within the San Juan National Forest. This park offers a classic mountain experience, where the sound of the West Dolores River provides a constant backdrop to your stay. Spread across several acres of forested land, it provides a perfect base for exploring Southwest Colorado's rugged beauty while maintaining a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere that appeals to those looking to disconnect from the hustle of daily life.
Location & Surroundings
Located northeast of Dolores, Colorado, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 7,700 feet. The surroundings are dominated by towering ponderosa pines and lush riverbanks. The drive into the canyon is scenic, offering views of dramatic rock formations and dense mountain woodland. Because of its remote position, guests enjoy dark night skies perfect for stargazing and frequent sightings of local wildlife, including deer and various native mountain birds.

The campground features spacious sites, many of which are riverfront locations that allow you to fish just steps from your door. Modern conveniences include full hookup RV sites with both 30 and 50-amp service, well-maintained shower facilities, and a guest laundry room. For those traveling without a rig, the park offers cozy cabins. A general store on-site provides essential supplies, ice, and firewood, ensuring you have everything needed for a comfortable forest stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are perfectly positioned to visit Mesa Verde National Park, located about forty-five minutes away. The nearby McPhee Reservoir offers excellent boating and water sports, while the historic town of Rico is just a short drive north. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of hiking and OHV trails within the national forest or take a scenic day trip to the mountain town of Telluride to experience its world-famous gondola and waterfalls.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal destination for avid anglers looking for easy access to trout-rich waters right outside their camper. It also caters to travelers who prefer a cooler, high-altitude climate during the summer months to escape the desert heat. It is best suited for those who appreciate a quiet, nature-centric vibe rather than a busy resort atmosphere. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of moving water, this is your spot.

Great small and clean campground with a great host (Blaine). Some sites have electric but most don’t. Some sites are by reservation, some first come. No dump. Water fill as you come in. Does have a Trash bin available. Some sites are right on the river but you do have to navigate the under brush to get to it. Quiet and relaxing.

Campground and facilities were very clean. The camp host Blane was very personable and attentive. The BEST national Forest campground! We will definitely return!
Life with Spock
The camp host Blaine was great! He directed me to a wonderful FF site along the river, surrounded by wild roses. If I hadn't made plans to continue to another location I would have loved to stay longer. The only reason I removed one star is because recreation.gov is lacking in information or is incorrect, specifically how many FF sites are available, check in and check out times. Also, $32 a night is too much for a site without electric that does not have a dump site or freshwater fill.

A great place to camp right next to the West Dolores River. There are some electric spots. Beautiful area!!

Secluded, shaded with large pines on river. Pit toilet was clean. Compact sites. State parks a la carte systems have gotten pricey. My TMobile cell did not work.
