San Juan/West Fork

Overview

San Juan/West Fork offers a quintessential Colorado mountain experience situated along the banks of the West Fork of the San Juan River. Located just a short drive from Pagosa Springs, this park serves as a serene gateway to the San Juan National Forest. It provides a tranquil mountain atmosphere where the sound of rushing water and the scent of ponderosa pines create a peaceful environment. It is a seasonal destination that captures the rugged beauty of high-altitude RVing while maintaining a welcoming community feel.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned northeast of Pagosa Springs, tucked away from the main highway noise at the base of Wolf Creek Pass. This location makes it an ideal basecamp for those wanting to explore the high-country terrain of southwestern Colorado. Surrounded by towering cliffs and dense forest, the property offers immediate access to the river. The scenic mountain vistas and shaded campsites provide a natural canopy that keeps the park cool during the peak of the summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

Guests can choose from a variety of sites, including spacious pull-thru spots designed to accommodate larger rigs. Most sites come equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50 amp electric service, along with picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. The park maintains essential facilities such as clean restrooms, showers, and a laundry room for guest convenience. One of the most highlighted features is the direct river access, which allows visitors to fish for trout or simply relax by the water without leaving the grounds.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within a 20-minute drive. A trip into town leads to the world-famous Great Pagosa Hot Springs, perfect for soaking after a day of hiking. The nearby Weminuche Wilderness offers miles of trails for all skill levels, while the river itself is a haven for fly fishing. For those who enjoy scenic drives, the trek up to Wolf Creek Pass provides breathtaking overlooks and access to high-alpine meadows and hidden waterfalls.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for travelers seeking a rustic yet comfortable retreat away from the more crowded resort-style parks. It appeals strongly to trout fishers, hikers, and nature lovers who prioritize a scenic setting and a quiet pace of life. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a river and waking up in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, this park provides the perfect backdrop for your Colorado road trip adventures.

I was surprised to find it so full on a Tuesday, but we were still able to get a sweet spot with some privacy. The host was so kind and helpful, just a sweetheart. The bathrooms were the cleanest campground bathrooms I’ve ever experienced. The host not only puts occupied on the signs, he also writes an open till date when applicable! Now I know why this place is so successful- it’s the amazing host!

This was such a nice campground. Out camp host was exceptional. He gave us recommendations on what to see and do. Very helpful and knowledgeable. We had four rv's with us. Two fifth wheels and two motor homes. Sites 15,16,17 and 18 were perfect. With easy access to the stream. Sites were clean and spacious. No cell service

Stayed here un our RV a couple years ago and absolutely loved it. Very serene. Camp host was friendly. Sites are spaced apart. Much nicer than camping at a place like Navajo Dam.

Hands down best campsite! The host is so friendly and helpful, he keeps the campsite clean as well as the vault toilets. Beautiful place to disconnect with the world for awhile, definitely have plans to return.

This campground is down a very bumpy dirt road, but we haul a trailer and took it slow. The camp host John is so friendly and keeps the bathrooms SO CLEAN!! It is quiet and you can hear the river in early June just roaring and great to fall asleep to. The hikes around are beautiful. A great place to camp, relax and hike. Lots of reservations and first come first serve sites. We will be back again.
