San Juan/Williams Creek

Overview

San Juan/Williams Creek RV Park offers a high-altitude escape for travelers looking to distance themselves from the noise of urban life. Located deep within the San Juan National Forest, this park serves as a gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness. Unlike standard roadside stops, this destination provides a serene mountain atmosphere where the sound of the wind through the pines replaces traffic noise. It is a well-maintained base camp for those seeking a true Colorado alpine experience.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 23 miles north of Pagosa Springs, the park sits at an elevation of about 8,000 feet. The surrounding landscape is dominated by rugged peaks and dense forests of ponderosa pine and aspen. The park is located just a short drive from the Williams Creek Reservoir, a stunning alpine lake known for its crystal-clear waters. Travelers should expect a scenic mountain drive along Piedra Road to reach this remote and beautiful high-country sanctuary.

Amenities & Park Features

Despite its remote location, the park provides essential comforts including full hookup sites with both 30 and 50-amp service. The sites are designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes, featuring leveled gravel pads for stability. Guests have access to clean restroom and shower facilities, which are vital for comfort after long days in the backcountry. While the focus remains on the natural environment, the park infrastructure ensures a reliable stay without sacrificing the rugged feel of the mountains.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for adventure just minutes away. The nearby reservoir is a popular spot for trout fishing and kayaking, offering some of the best water recreation in the region. Hiking trails such as the path to Piedra Falls provide accessible treks to beautiful waterfalls and scenic overlooks. For those willing to drive back toward town, the world-famous Great Pagosa Hot Springs offer a relaxing soak to soothe muscles after a day of exploring.

Who This Park Is Best For

Nice campground. Many of the sites are well spaced. Bathrooms were clean & well-stocked. Easy access to reservoir on short trail. Quiet area. Views from some sites. Fires allowed in fire rings. General store with ice, beer, food is about a 7 minute drive.

This is a first come first serve campground. There are some nice spots. Most do not provide shade. The vault toilets are clean and presentable. We were camping the weekend of June 21st, 2025. There was a race going on in the area that weekend. We were told and decided to camp here anyway. Big mistake. The people organizing were loud, all over the place and very disruptive. In my opinion the fee for that day should have been waved. The bathrooms were crowded. They were crowding the roads and just parked their cars everywhere and anywhere. This started at the crack of dawn and just got worse. Its our fault for thinking it wouldn't be that bad. We weren't told how bad of a disruption it would be either. It was a big mess. To Williams Creek- if you do this in the future please warn campers of how bad it really is and waive the fee for that day. It was an inconvenience and it took away from the camping experience.

Beautiful campground. The fishing is good. The views are amazing. The campsites are large. Vault toilets are very clean. Would definitely camp there again.

This place is simply fantastic! Beauty everywhere and this camp host is the best I’ve ever encountered. The sites and restrooms are spotless! And we felt so welcome and comfortable. This is our new favorite.
