San Onofre SB-Bluffs

Overview

San Onofre SB-Bluffs offers a quintessential Southern California coastal experience along a historic stretch of Old Highway 101. Unlike traditional luxury resorts, this is a rustic beach camping destination where the steady rhythm of the Pacific Ocean provides the primary soundtrack. The park is uniquely situated on a narrow strip of land, providing a rare opportunity to camp directly overlooking the water on a relatively undeveloped stretch of the iconic Orange County coastline.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of the city of San Clemente, the park stretches across three miles of scenic coastal bluffs. The setting is visually dramatic, featuring rugged sandstone cliffs that drop sharply down to pristine sandy beaches. It is bordered by the vast Pacific Ocean to the west and the expansive rolling hills of Camp Pendleton to the east. While the proximity to the freeway ensures easy access, the constant ocean breeze and panoramic coastal views create a distinct sense of isolation.

Amenities & Park Features

This is primarily a dry camping facility, which means there are no hookups for electricity, water, or sewer at the individual campsites. However, the park is very well-suited for self-contained RVs, offering a central dump station and several potable water fill-up points throughout the grounds. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. The facilities remain basic, featuring chemical toilets and outdoor showers that prioritize a minimalist connection with nature.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is the beach, which is accessible via several steep footpaths leading down the cliffside. This area is a world-renowned destination for surfing and beachcombing. Just north of the campground sits Trestles, home to some of the most famous surf breaks on the planet. Visitors can also take a short drive to the San Clemente Pier for local dining or visit the nearby San Onofre Surf Beach to experience the legendary longboarding culture at Olders.

Who This Park Is Best For

San Onofre SB-Bluffs is best suited for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty and location over modern luxury amenities. It is a top choice for surfers, outdoor enthusiasts, and families seeking a rugged California beach escape. The park is perfect for those who want a sunset-focused experience and the chance to fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves, offering one of the most authentic and unrefined coastal stays in the state.

One of the best hidden places in Orange County we've been meaning to come here for a while now and it did not disappoint. If you're looking for a peaceful place this is it. you can also go fishing and the hike is really good there's so many trails to choose from. Can't wait to camp here next time to explore more. restrooms are also good and well maintained

San Onofre (Sano) is literally my favorite beach — hands down. It’s one of the few places in Orange County that still feels totally secluded and untouched. There are no houses, no crowds of tourists, and when you’re there, it honestly feels like you’ve escaped OC completely. It’s an amazing spot for surfing — especially for longboarding and mid-length boards. Most days the waves are mellow and perfect, but on the bigger days, it can get really fun. It’s not always great at high tide, and when there’s a negative tide it can get super rocky, so timing is key. There’s so much more to love about Sano than just the surf, though. There are volleyball courts, BBQs, and tons of space to hang out with friends and family. Dogs are allowed, which makes it even better, and the lifeguards there are top-notch — super friendly and always keeping an eye out. The park staff does an incredible job keeping the bathrooms and grounds so clean, and there are even outdoor showers to rinse off after a long day in the water. The only real downside is the long line to get in, especially on weekends, and the rangers don’t always check for open spots, which makes it move slower. But I usually e-bike in, which skips the wait completely — and honestly, that’s part of why I love it. There’s just something about Sano: the mellow vibe, the sound of the waves, the community feel, and that sense of being totally off the grid. It’s pure magic. 🌊☀️🔥

This beach is tough to reach if you have a large vehicle. We actually arrived there by accident. It was late at night and we were looking for a safe place to stop and sleep. We found ourselves in a line of surfers eating for the gate to open at 0630. They told us that vehicles needed to be less than 24 feet. We told the folks behind us that we were just in line to sleep, and to just go around us in the morning. They did. We awoke to a gentle tap on the door. It was a ranger, who was already aware that we intended to turn and burn in the morning. She guided us to a place we could turn around. We never went to the beach, that wasn't our goal, but the beach goers and the rangers were very friendly.

Beautiful beach. The trek down and back up from the beach is steep. Definitely difficult with small children if you don't have help. Great for surfing but watch out for the rocks!! 3 star review because***Lots of off leash dogs here. So heads up because owners are not watching their dogs, they are out surfing or half way down the beach. Very unsafe imo.

If you're looking for a great beach to do some camping, plenty of beach trails, lots of people to meet who are also camping, swimming, and hiking, then this is a pretty good spot. I thought there were some really good scenic views at this particular beach and the way the rock has worn has some unique striations. I've never been to this beach before but it was super peaceful and plenty of room so you don't feel overcrowded like it's some beaches. The speech feels like you go here more for nature than to socialize. Peaceful spot!
