Sandbar Lake
Overview
Sandbar Lake Provincial Park offers a quintessential Northwestern Ontario experience characterized by its crystal-clear waters and expansive sandy shores. Situated just north of the Trans-Canada Highway, this park serves as both a peaceful retreat and a practical stop for travelers traversing the vast landscape between Thunder Bay and Kenora. The park is defined by its shallow, family-friendly beaches and the unique geological features left behind by ancient glaciers, creating a welcoming atmosphere for those exploring the Great North.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 12 kilometers north of the town of Ignace, the park sits within the heart of the Boreal Forest. The surrounding landscape is dotted with impressive glacial erratics, which are massive boulders deposited thousands of years ago. These stones create a striking contrast against the dense stands of pine, spruce, and birch. The lake itself is renowned for its incredible clarity and gentle slopes, making it one of the safest and most inviting swimming spots in the entire region.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides a range of facilities catering to RVers, including electrical campsites that can accommodate various rig sizes and provide much-needed power in the woods. Key amenities include:
- Modern comfort stations equipped with flush toilets and laundry facilities.
- A trailer dump station and pressurized water filling stations.
- A well-maintained boat launch designed for easy lake access.
These services ensure a level of convenience for visitors while maintaining the rustic charm and natural integrity of the Northwestern Ontario wilderness.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Rockway Trail, which winds through diverse forest types and past massive ancient rock formations. Fishing is a major draw here, as the lake supports healthy populations of walleye, yellow perch, and northern pike. Just a short drive away in the town of Ignace, visitors can investigate local history or use the town as a base for further exploration. The surrounding area offers endless opportunities for canoeing and wildlife viewing in a serene, uncrowded environment.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal destination for family campers seeking a safe, natural environment where children can swim in the shallow waters. It is also a perfect choice for cross-country RVers looking for a scenic and quiet alternative to crowded private campgrounds along the main highway. If you appreciate rugged Canadian Shield landscapes but prefer the reliability of established provincial park infrastructure, Sandbar Lake offers a balanced blend of natural beauty and essential comforts.

This park, located about 11 km from Ignace, is a perfect place for a rest stop or camping. As we were en route to Winnipeg, we only stayed for a driving break. The picnic facilities (which are located right at the park entrance) are great, as is the playground, wonderful beach, and water tap that you can use to wash sand or rinse cutlery and plates.

An exceptionally quiet park with good campsites with a huge beach where you can walk out almost a kilometer before the water hits your shoulders. Not so good if you want to swim laps but my kids thought it was amazing and a highlight of their day.

Sandbar lake provincial park is alright. We were there in the middle of June and were swarmed with mosquitos. Wow. After spraying ourselves with bug spray, we went for a wander through the campsite and found so much standing water that I would be surprised if there weren't that many mosquitos. When we arrived at the gate, we were told the best way to get to our campsite. Nope. Eventually I will learn not to trust summer employees how I shoulda maneuver the roads to park a 45ft trailer. The dock needs a bit of upkeep but nothing that affected us as we don't have a boat. The trees are tall so if you have starlink, you're going to want to just leave it packed up. There is very next to no cellular service in the campground.

Beautiful beach. Very clear water and clean park. Very shallow for a long way out...ideal for kids but not people who really want to swim. Still well worth it.
