Sanford Park

Overview

Sanford Park offers a peaceful and welcoming resting spot for travelers exploring Montana's iconic Hi-Line. Located within the heart of Chester, this municipal park provides a lush, green oasis amidst the vast and beautiful prairie landscape. It is well-regarded by the traveling RV community for its simplicity and cleanliness, offering a quiet environment for those navigating the long, scenic stretches of US Highway 2. The park serves as a vital community hub where visitors can relax under the big sky.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the center of Liberty County, the park is conveniently located near the main corridor of Chester. The local surroundings are defined by the expansive Big Sky country, characterized by rolling wheat fields and distant, clear horizons. Its strategic position along the northern Hi-Line route makes it an excellent stopover for those traveling between the jagged peaks of Glacier National Park and the eastern plains of the state. The town itself provides a friendly, small-town atmosphere that makes visitors feel right at home.

Amenities & Park Features

Although the park maintains a rustic and quiet atmosphere, it is equipped with the essential features needed for a comfortable and convenient stay. It provides full hookup sites that include water, sewer, and electrical connections for ease of use. The grounds are beautifully shaded by mature trees, offering much-needed relief from the summer sun. Visitors also frequently enjoy the well-maintained grassy picnic areas and the park's proximity to local town services, allowing for easy walks to nearby shops and cafes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the close proximity to Lake Elwell and Tiber Dam, which are located just a short drive south of town and offer premier fishing, boating, and bird-watching opportunities. The majestic Sweetgrass Hills are visible in the distance, providing a stunning backdrop for photography and hiking. Additionally, history buffs can visit the Liberty County Museum to learn about the region’s rich homesteading and agricultural heritage, featuring unique exhibits on local life.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for long-distance road trippers who are looking for a reliable, safe, and no-frills place to recharge during their journey across Montana. Off grid, just the way we like it. Quiet and peaceful, minus the boat trailers cycling in and out. Good river entry. The river can be a little shallow in spots and swift. The camp sites are well marked, and some require a little maneuvering to get into. A few good handicap sites too. Good green space to play, but bring some STRONG bug spray for mosquitoes. A large, separate parking area is on the other side of the camping sites. Besides the trucks with boat trailers parking in the empty camp sites (lazy and rude in my opinion), there's nothing negative about this campground.

Cute little area! Not very many people so it was nice and quiet. Campground is very well kept as well!

Perfect place for camping. Beautiful view of the river, very clean and spacious and access to the river for fishing, boating, or kayaking. Fire pits and picnic table at each campsite as well as a softball field. Restrooms on site, and camping is free. Lack of more tree coverage leads to a slight lack of privacy, but otherwise it's a wonderful place.

Gravel pads & concrete handicap accessible pads for RVs, and grassy areas for tents. Immediate river access for tubing/kayaking/canoeing or fishing the Marias River. Lovely.
