Santa Fe/Jack's Creek Campground
Overview
Jack's Creek Campground offers a high-altitude escape within the Santa Fe National Forest. Situated at approximately 8,900 feet, this facility serves as a primary gateway for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of northern New Mexico. It provides a rustic camping experience that prioritizes natural scenery over luxury amenities, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet retreat from the desert heat.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is located north of the town of Pecos, NM, at the northern end of Highway 63. The journey to the site involves a scenic drive along the Pecos River, winding through steep canyons and dense alpine forests. Once at the camp, visitors are surrounded by open mountain meadows and towering ponderosa pines, with the Pecos Wilderness bordering the area, offering sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest site, facilities are basic but well-maintained. The park offers vault toilets and seasonal potable water stations for visitors. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a steel fire ring for evening campfires. While there are no hookups for RVs, several sites can accommodate medium-sized rigs. There is also a dedicated equestrian area with corrals, making it a unique destination for travelers bringing horses.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the main draw here. The Jack's Creek Trailhead provides direct access to miles of backcountry hiking and horseback riding paths leading into the wilderness. Anglers can find excellent trout fishing opportunities in the nearby Pecos River. For a change of pace, the Pecos National Historical Park is a short drive away, offering a glimpse into the region's diverse cultural history and ancient pueblo ruins.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who enjoy being disconnected from the grid. Because of its high elevation and primitive nature, it is perfect for nature photographers and hikers who want to stay close to wilderness trailheads. RVers with smaller trailers or truck campers will find this a peaceful alternative to the more crowded commercial parks found closer to Santa Fe.

One of my most favorite campgrounds in NM. The view you get in the morning is so serene. The restrooms are also cleaner than most other campgrounds.

We had a Great time here trails to walk and a nice location. They close for the season in 1 week. There is a stream nearby that is good for fishing or serene enough for relaxing and dipping in your toes.
