Santa Margarita Lake
Overview
Santa Margarita Lake offers a serene escape nestled in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Serving as a primary water supply for the region, the lake maintains a peaceful atmosphere because body-contact activities like swimming are prohibited. It is widely recognized for its natural beauty and tranquil waters, making it a favorite for those seeking a quiet retreat along California's Central Coast. The park provides a rustic charm that contrasts beautifully with the more developed coastal resorts found nearby.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 10 miles southeast of the town of Santa Margarita, the park is tucked away in the scenic oak-studded hills of San Luis Obispo County. The drive to the lake passes through rolling landscapes and golden grasslands characteristic of inland California. It is far enough from major highways to offer a quiet, dark-sky experience, yet it remains perfectly positioned for travelers who want to explore both the rugged mountains and the nearby Pacific coastline during the day.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features several distinct camping loops, with the Grey Pine area offering sites suited for RVs, including options with electric and water hookups. Common amenities include restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a convenient dump station for self-contained rigs. Boaters will appreciate the well-maintained marina, which provides rentals and launch facilities. While the facilities lean toward a more traditional outdoor experience, the presence of shaded picnic areas and accessible trails ensures a comfortable stay for all visitors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is a standout activity here, as the lake is regularly stocked with bass, trout, and catfish. Because the water remains calm, it is also a premier destination for kayaking and canoeing. For those who prefer land-based activities, the park boasts an extensive network of multi-use hiking trails that offer panoramic views of the water and surrounding peaks. Beyond the park, visitors can easily reach the award-winning wineries of Paso Robles or the historic downtown area of San Luis Obispo.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer a primitive or semi-rustic environment over a crowded resort. It is a haven for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and anglers who value solitude and frequent wildlife sightings. Families and solo travelers looking for a peaceful home base while touring the Central Coast wine country will find Santa Margarita Lake to be a refreshing and quiet alternative to more commercialized urban parks.

Grey Pine trail is a very nice trail, moderately wooded and shaded, with great views of the lake and wildlife. We saw a bobcat and a buck. A decent amount of elevation up’s and downs, to burn some calories without burning you out. Highly recommend.
