Saskatoon Island

Overview

Saskatoon Island Provincial Park offers a peaceful retreat located just outside of Wembley, Alberta. Established as one of the oldest provincial parks in the region, it serves as a vital sanctuary for migratory birds and local wildlife. It provides a classic camping experience where the focus is on reconnecting with nature while enjoying the convenience of being close to urban centers. The park is characterized by its lush greenery and historic significance within the Peace River region.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled on an isthmus between Saskatoon Lake and Little Lake, the park provides a unique landscape for travelers. The area is famous for its abundance of wild Saskatoon berries, which ripen in late summer and give the park its name. As a designated bird sanctuary, visitors often spot rare species such as the Trumpeter Swan. The surrounding terrain is flat and accessible, making it an easy drive for those navigating larger RV rigs through the Alberta parkland.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features over 100 sites, including many equipped with 30-amp power hookups for RVers. While full sewer hookups are not available at individual sites, the park provides a convenient on-site sani-dump station and fresh water filling taps for your convenience. Each site includes a fire pit and picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings. Families will appreciate the large playground and the well-maintained shower facilities and pit toilets located throughout the various camping loops.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive away is the world-class Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, which is a must-visit for families and history buffs exploring the Wembley area. For those seeking outdoor activity, the park offers extensive paved biking trails and hiking paths that wind through the shrubbery and along the scenic lakeshore. If you need major supplies or a taste of city life, the city of Grande Prairie is located only twenty minutes to the east, offering full shopping and dining services.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who enjoy quiet mornings and wildlife photography in a serene setting. It is also perfect for families looking for a structured but natural environment with plenty of space for children to explore safely. Because of its proximity to the main highway, it serves as an excellent high-quality stopover for travelers heading north toward the Alaska Highway who prefer a scenic experience over a standard roadside park.

I'm glad I took the trip to visit the park. I took the walking trial, and it was so relaxing, quite, and what an energy booster . Lots of camping areas available.

Outdoor parks with playground equipment, beautiful walking trails, plenty of campground spaces and a gorgeous view of the lake- what's not to like? Certain buildings can be rented out to use for hosting party events as well and there are a decent number of picnic tables. I happened to be on a field trip and thr students really enjoyed exploring the great outdoors. The trails are very private so we did not disturb any campers. At lunch we were able to treat them to cooked hotdogs and hamburgers right there on-site! It's also worth mentioning that they have multiple outhouses scattered around the trails and while not fancy, they get the job done.

I would love to give it a "4" for well maintained spaces, great private campsites, lovely small lake, hike and bike paths, free firewood, showers, clean amenities. Lots to do here!!!! But....be prepared to be surrounded by oversized RVs running generators all day!!! Past 11pm and well into 1 am as well. Maybe we just got unlucky with neighbours but judging by how many of them you can hear at a time....makes me think it's kinda a norm here. If there are rules like in other parks, they are not followed and no campground staff was visible to enforce any rules.

We stayed at the walk in tenting sites. They are large and right on the water, mostly private. The park is a bird sanctuary, so you can watch and listen to all kinds of birds. This adds a peaceful and serene touch to the place. The water is not suitable for swimming, but it makes a beautiful backdrop and you can watch birds and animals there.

There are some nice day use areas as well as camping. The trails are a nice way to enjoy nature and see/hear all the birds. It appears to be fairly well maintained! It's a nice spot for a sunny day to be away from the city.
