Schafer

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Schafer State Park is a peaceful, historic retreat tucked away in the lush forests of Western Washington. Originally donated by the Schafer family in the early 20th century, this park is now a National Historic District renowned for its quiet charm and riverside beauty. It offers a classic Pacific Northwest experience where the sound of the water and the wind through the Douglas firs provide the soundtrack for your stay. Unlike busy modern resorts, this park focuses on preserving the natural and architectural heritage of the region.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Elma, WA, the park sits along the banks of the East Fork Satsop River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense, moss-draped forests and fertile river valleys. Its position provides a perfect midpoint for travelers heading toward the Olympic Peninsula or the Washington coast, offering a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from the highway despite being easily accessible. The river serves as the focal point of the landscape, winding gently through the wooded camping areas.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park maintains a rustic vibe, it provides essential utility hookups for RVers, including several sites with water and electricity. Visitors have access to clean restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station for self-contained rigs. The park is famous for its historic stone structures, including picnic shelters and guardrails built by the Works Progress Administration during the 1930s, which add a unique and timeless aesthetic to the campground facilities.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the fishing opportunities for salmon and steelhead in the Satsop River. On-site trails offer gentle hikes through the woods, while the river provides cool relief for swimmers and wading during the summer months. For those looking to explore further, the Olympic National Forest is a short drive away, offering world-class hiking and rugged mountain scenery. Local museums in nearby Elma and Montesano offer a glimpse into the region's logging history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural beauty over commercial resort-style amenities. It is ideal for families seeking a traditional camping experience where the focus is on river play, birdwatching, and evening campfires. If you enjoy quiet, forested settings and historic charm, Schafer State Park is a perfect fit for your next Washington road trip.

Our family stayed here (we couldn't get in and stayed at Elma RV Park, about 12 miles away). Mixed camping; FHU, PHU, tents Bathrooms are permanent but small, 1 shower per bathroom Please note that there are no lights around the bathrooms at night -- very dark Big sites, fire pit at most campsites Very kid-friendly and lots of camping kids As a visitor, not a camper, I can't rate it accurately, but we spent a lot of Memorial Day weekend there and it was a good camping spot. - Review provided by RV Park Recommendations & Reviews Facebook Group
