Sears Bellows (Suffolk County Park)

Overview

Sears Bellows County Park offers a tranquil escape located in the heart of Hampton Bays, NY. Spanning approximately 900 acres, this park is a cornerstone of the Long Island Central Pine Barrens ecosystem. Unlike the bustling resort towns nearby, this destination provides a rustic camping experience that prioritizes nature and serenity over modern luxury. It serves as an ideal base for travelers looking to explore the South Shore of Long Island without the high costs often associated with the Hamptons.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the eastern end of Long Island, the park is defined by its unique freshwater ponds, specifically Bellows Pond and Sears Pond. The landscape features dense pine forests and sandy soils characteristic of the region. While the park feels secluded and peaceful, it is conveniently located just minutes away from Atlantic Ocean beaches and the Peconic Bay. This dual access to both deep woodland trails and coastal breezes creates a diverse environment for outdoor enthusiasts.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to both tent and RV campers with a variety of site types spread throughout the woods. Key amenities and features include:

  • Freshwater fishing for bluegill, bass, and perch in the well-maintained ponds.
  • Extensive hiking and bridle paths that wind through the Pine Barrens landscape.
  • Seasonal rowboat rentals for a quiet afternoon on the water.
  • Restroom facilities and a dedicated picnic area with a playground for families.

Campers should note that the sites offer a traditional woodsy vibe. While some sites offer electric hookups, many remain primitive to preserve the natural atmosphere of the park, making it a favorite for those who enjoy dry camping.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive from the park entrance, visitors can enjoy the sun and surf at Ponquogue Beach, one of the area’s most popular oceanfront spots. For those interested in local maritime culture, the Shinnecock Inlet offers excellent views and access to commercial fishing docks. You can also explore the upscale boutiques and world-class dining of the surrounding Hamptons villages. Nature lovers often head to the nearby Quogue Wildlife Refuge for further hiking and wildlife viewing.

Who This Park Is Best For

Sears Bellows is an excellent choice for budget-conscious RVers who prefer a quiet, natural setting over a high-density commercial resort. It is perfectly suited for families who enjoy outdoor recreation like fishing and hiking together in a relaxed environment. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat that allows you to disconnect while staying close to the vibrant coastal culture of Long Island, this county park provides the perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility.

Went on a walk on one of the walking trails. 5 minutes into the walk we were covered in ticks, specifically lone star ticks. Hundreds of them. They were all over our dog and has taken hours and multiple vet visits to get off. Do not go here.

Stayed here camping for the weekend , great campground ! Staff is very friendly , restrooms are clean and they have paddle boat rentals that you can take out on the pond and try and catch some fish or just relax and enjoy the nature view and wildlife !! If you are a camper you must try this campground !! BE AWARE ALOT OF TICKS WAY TOO MANY !!!! They need to spray or something I have never been to a campground ever in my life with this many ticks. We had to cut our trip short due to the tick infestations.

Love this place. It was a holiday weekend so lots of people and very little privacy. I go here very frequently but enjoy it most when there are not so many people and we have open sites around us. Clean restroom and awesome new upgraded warm showers.

I've always loved the hike around the ponds and meeting up with the Paumanok Path. Great for a run, too. Maybe I'll do a race there!
