The location of Big Meadow Campground is excellent—beautiful forest setting, close to Hume Lake and great hiking trails. Our campsite was spacious and well laid out, with plenty of room to set up comfortably. However, a few issues really impacted our experience. First, the bugs were overwhelming, especially in the evening—mosquitoes and other flying insects were constant. You absolutely need strong repellent and protective clothing. My own handmade all-natural, organic bug-repellant bar lotion works excellent. Second, and more frustrating, our neighboring campers were extremely loud, laughing and chattering well past midnight. It went unchecked, and we didn’t see any campground staff around to enforce quiet hours. For a place that’s supposed to be peaceful, this was disappointing and made it hard to rest. Also, there is no potable water—you must bring your own. Overall, this campground has a lot of potential and the setting is beautiful, but the lack of quiet and bug control made our stay less enjoyable. Be prepared and maybe avoid weekends if you’re looking for a restful escape.

This campground and surrounding areas are beautiful and easy to find a spot if dispersed camping. We went during 4th of July weekend and figured we were not going to get a great spot but we did both nights we went. About 20 min from General Grant tree as well.

Pretty nice campground, plenty of space per spot. Decent bathrooms. Fires allowed in fire pits. Dog friendly. We were lucky enough to be fairly close to the bathrooms, some other camp spots within the same campground were pretty far away. The campground is comprised of several units of camp sites, that stretch for a few miles down this road. The meadow nearby is gorgeous. If you take the road further into the woods, it gets very curvy and elevated. Incredible views if you're willing to go down several miles of pretty wild road.

A great out of the way camping spot. Both the north and south ends of the meadow have great camping. No water available. Outhouses and fire rings and some tables are provided. No cell reception at all. It was great. Lots of hiking, cycling and exploring to do. The pavement poops out just before the meadow. Fabulous place to camp. No fee.

Unit 5, Space 37 was fantastic! Our 21-foot travel trailer had no problem backing right into this space from the farthest entrance into the unit. The 1st entrance has part of the road washed out that I would not attempt to navigate, even without a travel trailer. Mosquitoes were heavy during the evening and early night, but nothing that a little OFF couldn't deter. The other's in our group were tent camping, and we made full use of the fire pits with attached grills, along with the picnic tables. Everything, including the bear boxes, was well-maintained. We had several dogs in our group and never worried about them getting cut or injured. The camp host, Penney, was absolutely wonderful. I'll definitely book this unit again.

It was dry. 95 degrees in the daytime 65 at night. Quite pleasant. The cap host Ms Penny helped us find a better campsite. That made our stay very pleasant.

Site 29 Unit 4 if you are looking for a great fishing spot. The creek runs next to the site and there are 3 pools with 10”+ trout. Clean vault toilet, each cluster of 4-5 sites share one. High bear activity, a camp in an adjacent unit had one visit, 07/25/24 weekend. When you arrive, visit the first information board you see, by the host site. That will tell you which unit your site is located in. This is especially important if arriving at night.

Awesome campground, bring warm clothes and good sleeping bags. It gets to 40 °F at night during the summer. You're surrounded by nature. it's amazing. Definitely come prepared to stay up late. The night sky is amazing.
