Sequoia/Hume Lake

Overview

Sequoia/Hume Lake offers a serene escape into the heart of the Sequoia National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 5,200 feet, this area provides a refreshing mountain climate that serves as a sanctuary from the summer heat of the valley below. Visitors come here to enjoy the historic 87-acre Hume Lake, which is framed by towering pines and rugged granite peaks. This destination serves as an ideal base camp for those wanting to explore the diverse landscapes of the Southern Sierra Nevada while enjoying a classic lakeside retreat.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the small community of Hume, CA, the park is uniquely tucked between Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. The surrounding environment is characterized by dense forests of cedar, fir, and pine, offering a lush backdrop for every campsite. The centerpiece of the area is the historic multi-arch dam, a marvel of early 20th-century engineering. The high-elevation location ensures that the air is crisp and the surroundings are quiet, providing a restorative experience for travelers looking to immerse themselves in nature.

Amenities & Park Features

Facilities in the Hume Lake area typically offer a rustic camping experience that prioritizes natural beauty over modern luxuries. Most sites are designed to accommodate the standard RV traveler with essential features such as:

  • Large fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor dining.
  • Access to potable water and vault or flush toilet facilities.
  • Proximity to the Hume Lake General Store for snacks and supplies.

While full hookups are rare in this rugged terrain, the trade-off is unparalleled access to the shoreline and the peaceful atmosphere of a forest setting. Many visitors appreciate the opportunity to disconnect from digital distractions under the vast mountain stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, with the iconic General Grant Grove located just a short drive from the lake. Hikers can enjoy the popular Hume Lake Loop, a gentle 2.8-mile trail that offers stunning views of the water and dam. Boating and fishing are primary draws, as the lake is regularly stocked with trout, providing excellent opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. For a more intensive trek, the nearby national park trails lead to some of the largest Giant Sequoia trees in the world, including the famous General Grant Tree.

Gorgeous, stunning, well-maintained campground. Labor Day Weekend is pretty crowded with those who come for the annual Country Fair. Lots of families, dogs, bikes, pop-up tents, kayaks, etc! The trail around the lake is great for walking or jogging. There’s no cell service up in the mountains and the roads to get to the campground are very windy. There are several little shops and stores for snacks or Hume apparel. Picked up a few postcards at the Hume Lake General store and noticed there’s a post office right behind the store. It’s like a little town! There are kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards available to rent per-hour, half day, or whole day. The lake is beautiful at all times of the day and this campground is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and explore the woods.

Amazing campground with plenty of camping space! Bathrooms are okay and have flush toilets. Check out Hume lake in the morning and at the dawn for picturesque views of it! Book early in advance it’s one of the most popular campgrounds in the area and all for the right reasons!

When renting a camping spot, go through the state park website. The rented spot will be numbered and have your name. The spot includes an area to fit a tent plus some space, parking, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Restrooms are nearby. Pet friendly. There's a store nearby but limited supplies. Lake was beautiful. Bring a flashlight!

Beautiful scenery, small quiet lake, sandy beach area to hang out in the water, with store nearby if needed for last minute items, great spacious camp sites too along with trails for hiking nearby.

Typical California lake campground. Nothing spectacular accommodations wise, but a beautiful location. Was not very happy about the camp host running a generator every evening. The last night they ran it until after 10:00 pm which was a bit annoying. Bathrooms are very sparse, no showers and sinks are half functional. Lake access is not easy from the campground and requires getting in the car and driving to reach the lake.
