Sesquicentennial
Overview
Sesquicentennial State Park, affectionately known by locals as Sesqui, offers a lush green escape within the Sandhills region of South Carolina. This historic park was originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and today provides a scenic woodland setting for travelers. Spanning over 1,400 acres of pines and hardwoods, it serves as a quiet sanctuary that balances natural beauty with suburban convenience. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate well-preserved state parks with a deep sense of history and a peaceful atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Northeast Columbia, the park is remarkably easy to reach for those traveling along I-20 or I-77. While it sits near a busy commercial corridor, the dense forest creates a natural sound barrier that makes the city feel miles away. The surrounding landscape is characterized by sandy soil and towering pine trees, providing a unique environment typical of the state’s midlands. Its location makes it one of the most accessible natural retreats for anyone traveling through the heart of South Carolina.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features 84 sites, many of which are designed to accommodate modern RVs with electric and water hookups. Visitors have access to clean, centrally located bathhouses and a convenient dump station. Key amenities include:
- Spacious sites with 30-amp and 50-amp service
- A 30-acre lake for fishing and non-motorized boating
- A modern splash pad and large playground area
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the twelve miles of trails suitable for both hiking and mountain biking. Just a short drive away, you can explore the vibrant culture of downtown Columbia, including the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. For those interested in local history or government, the South Carolina State House is a must-visit landmark located nearby. The park’s proximity to these urban attractions allows for a diverse itinerary of nature and city life within a single trip.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an excellent choice for families seeking a recreation-heavy destination thanks to its playgrounds and water features. It also appeals to road trippers looking for a safe and beautiful overnight stop near the interstate. Because it provides a rustic yet accessible experience, it is perfect for RVers who want to be close to Columbia’s amenities while still falling asleep to the sounds of the forest.

Very nice and peaceful. Definitely can get your steps in. Biking and walking and even open space for soccer or football. Also there's a small water park for kids. Very very family friendly. Would recommend! Only 99.00 for a whole year. That's like not evan 3 pennies a day for year.

This is a beautiful park located in the middle of an urban setting. Beautiful sand trails, a large lake, a splash pad, and a small campground that needs some attention. The lower loop is best, but the upper loop has lots of tree roots and very steep sites. Would be easier to book if the park included site photos on the booking website. Overall, this is a great park!!!

We stopped for a picnic lunch and a quick walk on a today's road trip. While $6/per person is more than we are accustomed to seeing for State Parks you can tell the money is going to good use. We ate lunch right next to the lake. There are geese so watch your kiddos. We then took the short nature walk to see the spillway/waterfall. It's beautiful here by the lake and under the trees. There are two sets of playground equipment for kids and a bathroom close by. Today the splash pad was closed but looks super fun for kids.

Sesquicentennial State Park is a hidden gem! We really enjoyed our stay—the campgrounds were peaceful and well-maintained, the walking trails were beautiful, and the lake activities and splash pad added so much fun to the trip. It’s a great spot for families and nature lovers alike. Our only concern was the speed at which many vehicles were driving through the campground. With people walking and kids riding bikes, it felt unsafe at times. Slower speeds and better enforcement would really help. Overall, it’s a wonderful park we’d gladly return to. Just be cautious and watch your speed in the campground!

Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC was awesome! We had a blast paddle boating on the serene lake, surrounded by stunning scenery. The playgrounds catered to kids of all ages, and the splash pad was a huge hit with the little ones. The park also offers a free EV charger, a charming souvenir shop, a campground, and scenic trails for exploring. Whether you're looking for family fun or a peaceful outdoor escape, this park has it all. Highly recommend!
