Shasta Trinity/Ackerman
Overview
Located within the heart of Northern California's wilderness, the Ackerman Campground offers a peaceful retreat for RVers looking to connect with nature. Situated along the shores of Lewiston Lake, this facility is part of the vast Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It provides a scenic woodland setting where the pace of life slows down, allowing visitors to enjoy the rustling pines and the cool mountain air that defines this unique region of the state.
Location & Surroundings
The park is positioned near the quiet town of Lewiston, offering easy access to the Trinity River and the rugged Trinity Alps Wilderness. Unlike the busier nearby lakes, Lewiston Lake maintains a strictly enforced 10-mile-per-hour speed limit, ensuring the water remains calm and glassy. The surrounding landscape is a lush mix of oak and pine trees, providing ample shade and a sense of seclusion that is increasingly hard to find in modern RV travel.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers will find well-maintained sites featuring paved parking spurs designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes. While the park maintains a rustic charm, many sites offer electric and water hookups, blending convenience with a traditional camping experience. On-site facilities include picnic tables, fire rings, and access to potable water. The layout is designed to maximize privacy between campsites, making it a comfortable base camp for extended stays in the forest.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
This destination is a premier choice for world-class trout fishing, as the cold waters of the lake and river are stocked regularly. Beyond the water, visitors can explore miles of scenic hiking trails that wind through the national forest, offering glimpses of local wildlife like bald eagles and ospreys. A short drive away, the historic town of Lewiston provides a charming look at California gold-rush era heritage, while the nearby Trinity Dam offers impressive panoramic views.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for avid anglers and birdwatchers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style amenities. It is perfect for those who enjoy a quiet, low-speed environment where the focus is on outdoor recreation and relaxation. Whether you are traveling in a smaller camper or a larger motorhome, this location appeals to anyone seeking a genuine forest experience without completely sacrificing the convenience of utility connections.

Good campground for spring and fall. Not maintained as well as it could be. I had to trim the tree at my site before I backed in my trailer to avoid roof damage. Most sites have partial shade.

Campground is clean and well cared for, lots of spaces to choose from, and flushing toilets and running sinks! Only downside is the water is freezing. But we were able to swim in it because it was a 105!

I had a lovely stay here in July 2025 out of 50 site only 3 were occupied — me, one other set of campers and the camp hosts. So I felt like I had the place to myself. Perfect quiet and solitude, for me! I was skeptical at first because it’s right on the road. And I’ve turned that up on the south Hu River before and it wasn’t very restful. But I’ve been here for hours and I think I’ve only heard a couple of cars go by the entire time. There is a sweet little trail spanning most of the length of this big campsite, along the water. Very hot in July. you could probably fry an egg on one of these stone picnic tables, if it’s sitting in the full sun. But there is shade at probably every site at some point in the day, some more than others. it’s very level so perfect for people traveling in an RV or camper. Some of the parking spots were huge! i’m guessing that’s to leave space for your boat trailer? I was here on a Tuesday night so I don’t know how popular a place is one the weekends. But with the lake right here I imagine it’s a desirable summer camping spot. The camp hosts keep the restrooms spic and span and fully supplied. I enjoyed myself immensely just sitting at the water’s edge at perfect peace.

Campground hosts are awesome they checked on us and even brought us firewood. Fire pits are nice. We cooked on ours. No hook-ups for the trailer. Large sites with lots of room to play. I have a 33' pull trailer. Some of the spots would be very difficult to get into.

The camp hosts Michelle & Zane made my camping experience extra special! The maintenance person whose name I forgot was also very accommodating! He weed whacked the camp site and blew it off too before we set up our tent! Their presence made me feel safe! I would take my morning stroll around the campground and I was always greeted with a friendly hello from Michelle! I had a great adventure, clean and friendly! I would totally recommend this campground! Plenty of room between sites and the lake/river is right there for some great fishing, kayaking or whatever floats your boat! Bathrooms are clean, each site has a fire pit with grill, table, and you supply your own fun!!!!! 🎉👍🏕️
