Shasta Trinity/Sims Flat
Overview
Sims Flat Campground, situated within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, offers a deeply immersive nature experience for RVers. Located along a bend in the Upper Sacramento River near Castella, this historic site served as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp during the 1930s. Today, it provides a tranquil retreat where the sound of the rushing river replaces the noise of modern life. It is a place where history and natural beauty converge under a canopy of towering trees.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is nestled in a lush canyon, surrounded by a dense forest of Douglas firs and incense cedars. Its position along the Upper Sacramento River makes it a premier destination for those who appreciate riverside living. The surrounding terrain is rugged and dramatic, characterized by the nearby granite spires of Castle Crags State Park. The air here is crisp, and the landscape remains green and vibrant throughout the peak camping season.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a classic, rustic Forest Service facility designed for traditional camping rather than luxury amenities. While there are no utility hookups available, the park features paved parking spurs that can accommodate smaller RVs and trailers. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. Visitors have access to vault toilets and potable water, though many travelers come fully self-contained to enjoy the primitive, quiet atmosphere.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. The river is renowned for world-class fly fishing, particularly for wild trout and seasonal runs. Hikers can easily access the Pacific Crest Trail or explore the challenging peaks of Castle Crags just a short drive away. For those seeking iconic views, the snow-capped peak of Mount Shasta is a local landmark that offers photography and sightseeing opportunities within easy reach of the park.
Who This Park Is Best For
Sims Flat is ideal for RVers who prefer a secluded, rustic environment over the crowded amenities of a modern resort. It is best suited for owners of smaller rigs, camper vans, or truck campers who value peace and privacy. If you enjoy off-grid living and want to spend your days fishing or hiking in a historic setting, this park fits your travel style perfectly. It is a true haven for those looking to disconnect and recharge.

Beautiful spot to camp by the upper Sacramento River.

Beautiful scenery... however... the Grounds Host ruined my family's experience by walking up my car at 9pm at night and began hitting the hood of my car with his cain/garbage graber and began yelling "You can't park here!" When I walked up to him asking him who he was, and why he was hitting my car, he yelled that he was going to call the cops and left...we waited for the cops to come and they never showed. He left 3 large scratches on my hood. We were not being loud, we were respectful, but most of all, we were shocked by the Grounds Host's actions. Im not sure if he was drunk or on drugs but I dont see how someone can get so mad about a parked car (in a spot that looks like a parking spot. See pics)! The next morning I was talking to other fellow campers and was told the the day prior, the Grounds Host was going to each campground demanding they give him the money for the camp site and not to put it in the green drop box! Little suspicious if you ask me!

Excellent small camp ground near Shasta lake on the American River. Trains from time to time and stunning views. Clean campsites and it was fairly inexpensive.

Sweet little spot for overnight camping on a road trip. One squatter in the back. Nice views on the historical trail. Good fishing! Train blows whistle every time it passes, day or night; otherwise I’d give it 4 ⭐️.
