Shawnee/Pharoah Campground - Garden of the Gods Rec Area

Overview

Pharoah Campground serves as the primary gateway for overnight stays within the renowned Garden of the Gods Recreation Area. Located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest, this site offers a primitive camping experience that trades modern hookups for unparalleled access to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Midwest. It is a quiet, forested retreat where the focus remains entirely on the natural environment and the ancient sandstone geology that defines this unique region of Southern Illinois.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Herod, Illinois, the park is nestled high on a ridge within a massive wilderness tract. The surrounding terrain is characterized by sandstone outcroppings and deep, lush ravines that have been carved over millions of years. Because the campground sits under a dense canopy of mature oak and hickory trees, it offers a shaded environment that stays cool even during the warmer months. The immediate area feels secluded and wild, providing a true escape from urban noise and light pollution.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service facility, the campground features essential infrastructure for self-contained travelers who enjoy a rugged lifestyle. The amenities include:

  • A total of 12 designated sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill.
  • Access to clean vault toilets and seasonal drinking water via a communal hydrant.

While there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at the individual sites, the pads are generally level and paved. They are best suited for smaller RVs, camper vans, or tent setups rather than large luxury rigs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw is the Garden of the Gods Observation Trail, which is within easy walking distance from the campsites. This trail showcases stunning panoramic views of the wilderness and iconic formations like Camel Rock. For those seeking more distance, the River to River Trail passes nearby, offering rugged paths for backpackers and hikers. Additionally, the scenic Rim Rock National Recreation Trail and the swimming beach at Pounds Hollow are just a short drive away, offering diverse outdoor recreation.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize scenic beauty and immediate trail access over modern resort conveniences. It is a perfect fit for minimalist RVers or van-lifers who are comfortable boondocking without power. If you are seeking a peaceful, dark-sky environment to stargaze and enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the deep woods, Pharoah Campground provides an authentic and memorable wilderness experience.

Beautiful but small. Not alot of camp sites. One day was not so busy with some spots open. Next day all spots filled up after noon. Bathrooms are pit toilets but not bad. Clean water on site. No electricity. Plenty and simple and difficult trails near by. Definitely would stay here again.

We ended up there during an unfortunate weekend with a bunch of snow and rain. If they were looking for some suggestions, I'd say try to level out some areas and improve drainage. Most of the sites had standing water in the gravel and outside of the gravel quickly because a mud pit. With that being said, if you go there during nice weather I'm sure it's great
