Shawnee/Pine Ridge Campground-Pounds Hollow Rec Area
Overview
The Shawnee Pine Ridge Campground at Pounds Hollow Recreation Area offers a serene escape within the heart of the Shawnee National Forest. Originally developed in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this site provides a deep connection to the natural heritage of Southern Illinois. It is a place where the sounds of the city are replaced by the rustle of leaves and the calls of native birds, making it a premier destination for those seeking a rustic forest experience without sacrificing basic comforts like electricity.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the rugged hills of Karbers Ridge, the campground is surrounded by towering hardwoods and dramatic sandstone bluffs. The park is anchored by the 25-acre Pounds Hollow Lake, a hidden gem that provides a cooling oasis during the humid Illinois summers. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep ridges and narrow valleys, offering a distinct landscape that feels far removed from the flat prairies typically associated with the Midwest. It is a secluded sanctuary for those who appreciate natural topography.
Amenities & Park Features
The Pine Ridge loop accommodates RVers with a mix of electric hookup sites and primitive spots nestled under a dense canopy of pine and oak trees. While the park maintains a natural vibe, guests have access to essential facilities including hot showers and seasonal drinking water. It is important for travelers to note that there is no dump station on-site, so planning ahead is necessary. Each campsite is thoughtfully equipped with a picnic table and fire ring to encourage classic outdoor living and evening campfires.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is never far away, as the park is located just a short drive from the iconic Garden of the Gods, where the Camel Rock formation offers breathtaking views of the wilderness. Hikers can explore the Beaver Trail, which connects the campground directly to the Rim Rock National Recreation Trail, famous for its ancient stone walls and narrow rock crevices. For those who prefer the water, the lake beach provides a perfect spot for swimming, while the calm waters are ideal for kayaking and fishing for largemouth bass.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for nature enthusiasts and hikers who prioritize scenic beauty and trail access over resort-style amenities. It is a wonderful fit for families looking to unplug and enjoy a traditional lakeside vacation filled with swimming and exploring. Because of the winding roads and wooded sites, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and campers who enjoy a quiet, tranquil environment where the primary entertainment is found in the great outdoors.

Beautiful spot. Tall pines and plenty shady. Spacious sites (in electric loop), clean restrooms and firepits, and attentive staff, even during a government shut-down.

Pine Ridge Campgrounds is the perfect place to camp when visiting the Shawnee Forest! Our site was large and had plenty of space for us! The area was simply stunning; and only a few miles away from multiple hiking spots! We will definitely be returning next year!

Great experience. A small fee to have a nice spot in the middle of the woods to get out and explore the trails.

Large camp sites, good distance between each site. Good lake, nice facilities at the lake with beach area. Some Trails along lake not well maintained, lots poison Ivy all around!
