Overview
Shell Campground serves as a peaceful gateway to the Bighorn Mountains, offering a tranquil retreat for those traversing the Wyoming landscape. Nestled in the small, charming community of Shell, this park provides a quiet alternative to the more crowded tourist destinations in the region. It is widely recognized for its **well-maintained grounds** and the soothing sound of the nearby creek, which creates a serene environment for travelers looking to disconnect. The atmosphere here is distinctly laid-back and welcoming, perfectly reflecting the authentic and slow-paced lifestyle found in rural Wyoming.
Location & Surroundings
The park is strategically positioned at the foot of the magnificent **Shell Canyon**, which is home to one of the most breathtaking scenic drives in the entire state. Surrounded by dramatic red rock cliffs and gently rolling hills, the location provides immediate and easy access to the sprawling Bighorn National Forest. Travelers frequently utilize this spot as a primary resting point before or after navigating the steep mountain grades of U.S. Route 14. This landscape is defined by **striking geological formations** and the vast, open skies that make the western Wyoming experience so memorable for visitors.
Amenities & Park Features
While the park carefully maintains its rustic western charm, it does not skimp on the essential infrastructure required by modern RVers. The facility is designed to be functional and clean, offering several key features:
- **Spacious pull-through sites** that accommodate big rigs comfortably.
- Full hookups with **30 and 50-amp electrical service** at most sites.
- Clean restrooms, hot showers, and laundry facilities for guest use.
Additionally, **reliable Wi-Fi connectivity** is provided to help guests stay connected while they plan their upcoming routes through the rugged mountain passes or check in with family.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find an abundance of natural wonders to explore just a short distance from their campsite. A quick drive into the canyon brings visitors to the impressive **Shell Falls**, where thousands of gallons of water thunder through ancient Precambrian rock every minute. The surrounding area serves as a premier destination for hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing in the clear waters of Shell Creek. For history buffs and families, the nearby **Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite** provides a fascinating opportunity to walk where dinosaurs once roamed during the Jurassic period.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is perfectly suited for travelers who prioritize a **quiet and intimate setting** over the amenities of a large-scale commercial resort. It is an excellent choice for nature photographers, avid hikers, and anyone seeking a peaceful basecamp to explore the rugged beauty of the Bighorn Mountains. Due to its convenient location along a major travel route, it is also highly recommended for **long-distance RVers** who want a scenic and tranquil stopover that offers far more character than a standard highway-side parking lot.

We had an amazing stay! The cabins were modern and comfortable. They were very clean and the whole campground was quiet and simple. Would definitely recommend!

We were in Shell and almost out of gas. (No services in Shell). Stopped at the RV campground and the wonderful guys there sold us their lawnmower gas. Clean grounds and great people!

I absolutely loved my night in my glamping tent. The bed was so comfortable and warm on a chilly night, it made for perfect sleeping. This has the feel of a KOA, but is more smaller and more relaxed and personal touch to everything

We were going to camp near Ten Sleep but it was too cold so we switched to here. So glad we did. Everyone there was so friendly and helpful. The cabin was warm and clean with a REAL shower! We got a recommendation for an excellent hike just outside of town. There's also a wonderful store just down the street where we talked to lots of friendly locals. We even helped find the owner of an escaped baby pig!

The campground and cabin areas were well kept and clean. The self-check-in was convenient. The cabin was the perfect size for a couple and had a nice porch to sit on in the evening. The cabin looked relatively new, nicely decorated and very clean. We had an issue with the water heater and had trouble getting a hold of the management, but got things resolved pretty quickly afterward. It was a great place to stop for the night after exploring Shell Falls.
