Shelter Point Distillery

Overview

Shelter Point Distillery offers a unique farm-to-flask experience for RVers traveling the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. Set on a sprawling 380-acre estate, this site provides a peaceful and sophisticated alternative to traditional crowded campgrounds. Visitors can enjoy small-batch artisanal spirits while parked amidst sweeping fields of barley, just steps from the Salish Sea shoreline. This family-run estate represents a refined, quiet stopover that highlights the agricultural beauty and craft culture of British Columbia, making it a standout destination for those seeking more than just a place to park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated between Campbell River and Courtenay, the distillery is located in the serene community of Oyster River. The property features a rare combination of coastal shoreline and fertile farmland, framed by the dramatic backdrop of the Beaufort Mountains. The atmosphere is tranquil, with the air frequently carrying the scent of sea salt and ripening grain. Its location along the historic Island Highway makes it an easily accessible yet secluded retreat for those exploring the diverse landscapes and winding coastal roads of north-central Vancouver Island.

Amenities & Park Features

As a boutique destination rather than a traditional high-density campground, the focus here is on the sensory experience and natural beauty. The park features spacious, level parking areas specifically designed for self-contained RVs seeking a quiet dry camping environment. Guests are invited to visit the magnificent timber-framed tasting room and participate in guided distillery tours to learn about the traditional whisky-making process. While there are no utility hookups like power or water, the property provides beautifully maintained grounds and private walking trails that wind through the barley fields toward the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Just a short drive from the distillery, Miracle Beach Provincial Park offers wide sandy shores and old-growth forest trails that are perfect for afternoon exploration and wildlife viewing. Enthusiasts of the outdoors will appreciate the proximity to Campbell River, known globally as the Salmon Capital of the World, where visitors can book world-class fishing charters. Additionally, the Oyster River Potholes offer a local favorite spot for swimming in crystal-clear waters, while the nearby Comox Valley provides a vibrant scene of local galleries, boutique shops, and seasonal farmers markets.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize atmosphere, quietude, and unique local experiences over conventional resort amenities. It appeals particularly to adults and couples who enjoy fine spirits, scenic views, and the slow pace of rural farm life. If you are looking for a sophisticated coastal farm setting to rest your wheels between mountain adventures or coastal excursions, Shelter Point Distillery offers a truly memorable and distinctively British Columbian experience that caters to the slow travel movement.

For Whisky enthusiasts this is the place for you! Considered the best of Canadaian Whisky (in my opinion). Shelter Point a gem well worth traveling the gorgeous Oceanside Island Hwy to find this State-of-the-Art Facility and Tasting Room nestled in the Comox Valley. World Class Whisky made with locally farmed barley enriched by the Coastal sea air. Experts are ready to can sit you down with a tour and tasting that delivers some of the finest vintages of whiskies, and a few other spirits as well!

Shelter Point Distllery is a stunning example of B.C.s capacity to create world class whisky. The sprawling coastal acreage is a perfect place for their barley to thrive while be influenced by the sea’s air. The facility is absolutely gorgeous from the moment you turn on to the driveway into the lobby and into the distillery space itself with the beautiful copper pot stills, barrels, image etched windows and stonework. The staff are very knowledgeable and the whisky tastings will have any whisky lover ready to open up their wallet and take a selection home with them! A must visit for the enthusiasts and whisky curious alike!

Enjoyed a lovely tasting with my husband and his uncle! I didn't catch the lovely lady's name that gave us our tasting, but she was very personable. We will be back once again when we can visit from the Yukon! :)

Our group was part of an initial set of patrons who bought into three full barrel Whiskey casks at Shelter Point not long after it opened. We visited a few times to view our product (and to fill our casks initially) and each time has been a pleasure. It is a wonderful facility, wooden and stylishly crafted interior areas, with easily accessible tours (and it has been possible to book the production floor for events such as weddings, etc.). Lovely building and lots of gleaming copper and stainless steel distillation tanks. Nearby storage (harder to get a chance to see) with barrel aging space). All of the barley used in the whisky is grown on site.
