Shelter Point Regional Park
Overview
Shelter Point Regional Park serves as a peaceful coastal sanctuary on the shores of Texada Island. This destination is widely regarded for its stunning natural landscape, combining ancient Douglas fir forests with a pristine shoreline. Unlike high-density commercial parks, this regional gem offers a quiet, community-focused atmosphere that emphasizes the raw beauty of the Northern Gulf Islands. It is an ideal spot for those who want to disconnect and enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the Strait of Georgia.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Gillies Bay, BC, the park is positioned on the western edge of the largest island in the Gulf of Georgia. Getting here involves a scenic BC Ferries trip from Powell River, setting the stage for a true island adventure. The park is surrounded by two distinct beach areas, offering a mix of sandy stretches and rocky outcrops. The proximity to the Gillies Bay community allows travelers easy access to local culture while remaining immersed in a rugged, coastal wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides a traditional camping experience with over 50 sites suitable for various RV sizes. While the park focuses on a rustic experience without individual hookups, it features communal potable water and well-maintained pit toilets. Visitors can utilize the on-site boat launch for water access or enjoy the seasonal concession stand and picnic shelters. The park also boasts a network of nature trails that meander through protected groves, making it easy to explore the local flora and fauna on foot.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beachcombing is a primary pastime here, especially for those hunting for the famous Texada Flower Rock, a rare geological formation found on local shores. The calm waters of the bay are perfect for kayaking and swimming during the warmer summer months. Beyond the park, visitors can explore the Texada Island Museum to learn about the region’s maritime and mining history or take a short drive to Heisholt Lake for a change of scenery and freshwater recreation.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is a premier choice for self-contained RV travelers who prefer a rustic, off-grid environment over a resort-style stay. It is perfectly suited for families who enjoy outdoor exploration and couples looking for a tranquil coastal retreat. If your travel style involves watching sunsets over the ocean, hiking through old-growth timber, and embracing a slower pace of life, Shelter Point Regional Park will likely be a highlight of your British Columbia journey.

I really am hesitant to Express my true feelings about Shelter Point because you will all want to join me there. This Regional Park is simply wonderful. Not over developed or over used. Wonderful clean beauty. Concession was not open for my most recent visit but no problem. We just packed a lunch. If you are looking for beautiful scenery, clean lawns and beaches and quiet semi seclusion, this is it.

Beautiful camp ground with two lovely beaches, one rocky and one sandy. Lots of shade and areas to picnic with the family. The burger shack is pricy, but the food is satisfying. Washrooms are also very nice, with running water and soap. Oh, and how could I forget the absolutely stellar sunset views, almost every night you have some breathtaking scenery, be it a vivid amber sky or a phosphorescent shoreline. This site has so much to offer!

Great campground on a beautiful beach. First come, no reservations. Spacious treed campsites. Clean washrooms. Concession stand for French fries, ice cream etc. Great glass beach and swimming in the quarry.

Went on a cycling tour of Texada Island in Aug of 2019. Its 24k to Shelter Point Regional Park, all up hill. I called ahead a few days before leaving, asked if there could be a site available on the dates we would be there and were assured of a spot. The park operators were very helpful in every way including when we finally got to the park they showed us maybe the best spot in the whole campground.....beautiful beaches, super clean washrooms throughout....there's even a concession stand that offers a breakfast wrap or sandwich that was welcomed in the mornings by these travelers....and the fish and chips were to die for. Overall a wonderful time was had and I'm planning another trip for next summer to Shelter Point but I want to stay longer next time

This place is amazing. The view and sunsets are to die for. The caretakers are the sweetest people. The fishing is great if you bring a boat or zodiac. Free boat launch, great amenities at the campsite, real showers! My favorite spot to camp 1 week during summer for the sandcastle festival and skimboard competition weekend. They have a lipsing competition and dance party on the beach the night before the sandcastle competition at Gillies Bay. We have going there each year for 1 week for the past 6 years and will keep on going. AN ABSOLUTE MUST.
