Location & Surroundings
Situated near Elkton, VA, the campground sits at a high elevation, ensuring cooler temperatures during the humid summer months. One of the most popular nearby excursions is the Bearfence Mountain rock scramble, which offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding valley. Additionally, the stunning South River Falls is just a short drive away, providing a scenic spot for photography and wildlife viewing. The winding roads of Skyline Drive also offer countless overlooks for watching the sunset over the valley.
Who This Park Is Best For

Charming cabins or ripoff? Both. These are historic cabins (built in 1940) in a beautiful, natural mountain setting. Most visitors give them five-star reviews. They are responding to the historic value, charm, and rusticity, and apparently don't mind paying extra for the National Park brandname. This review is for the next to the last of the cabins, the last being the hiker's cabin, and for late fall. The setting is incomparable; however, walk inside and find two all-wooded vintage rooms that show the signs of the passing of time. The wood in walls and floors is frayed, the single-pane windows don't keep the wind and cold away, and the corners of floors show the grime of time. The cealing fan must be welcome in summer, but the wall heater makes such a racket that it is better to keep it off. Quieter space heaters are provided. There is one or two vintage wood chairs, a dresser, and one night stand with lamp in each room. A table provides the only amenity: a coffee machine. The bathroom is clean, the water hot. The beds are fine, but the lighting is poor. Overall the feeling is of an old cabin in the woods that should have been remodeled long ago, for example, by re-varnishing the wood and fixing the cracks in window and door frames. They are worth the charm and relaxation after a day of hiking, but at two-hundred plus dollars a night they are terribly overpriced.

LMC provides a throw back to a simpler time and an excelllent way to visit Shenadoah NP. Each cabin is simple and they are close to the natural beauty of the park. The cabins are rustic and in need of a bit of maintenance & updating, but we loved our stay there.

These cabins are nice. The bed is clean and comfortable, the bathrooms are too. The hot water in the shower was definitely welcome after hiking. There are chairs both inside and outside of the cabin and there's a picnic table in the back too. Each cabin seemed to have its own near proof garbage cans too which was nice. There was a fire pit out back with half of it covered with a grill for cooking. The campstore here had everything you would need, even ice cream and beer! The campstore had laundry and showers too for anyone hiking through or tent camping. All the staff we had met were nice as well

The cabins seem to be the original cabins, authentic and the remote location is desirable, just off the Appalachian Trail. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The room was nicely old, but not bug-proof. Four spiders met their end during our stay. However, during our stay a heavy rainstorm occurred and the cabin experienced multiple points of leaks in the roof. Fortunately, we were present during this. After a second heavy rain occurred (and more leaks) I complained to the front desk, asking for another room or full compensation. Understandably, no rooms were available but the front desk indicated they were not allowed to grant full compensation for the room. They did say they were allowed to grant a 20% discount (not granted after 4 days of leaving the cabin). I believe the staff members were very accommodating and the cabins have great potential. However, in order to meet the needs of people, more funds needs to be invested into the cabins, repairing the roof and renovating the cabins to keep them in better condition.

We had a wonderful experience at Lewis Mountain Cabins. It was our first trip as a family of three and our baby loved being outdoors with mommy and daddy. Our rooms were very clean and comfortable and the environment was so serene and relaxing. We will definitely be back.
