Shenandoah/Loft Mountain

Overview

High atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah/Loft Mountain offers a classic national park experience for those traveling through Virginia. Situated at mile 79.5 on the historic Skyline Drive, it stands as the largest campground in Shenandoah National Park. This destination provides an authentic connection to nature, where the focus remains on the sweeping vistas and crisp mountain air rather than modern digital distractions. It is the perfect place to experience the high-altitude beauty of the southern district of the park.

Location & Surroundings

The park is perched on a prominent hilltop in the southern section of the park near Elkton, VA. Guests enjoy an elevation that offers noticeably cooler summer temperatures and stunning panoramic views of the Blue Ridge foothills. The campground is strategically bordered by the Appalachian Trail, making it a premier spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Virginia wilderness while remaining close to some of the park’s most famous overlooks.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional national park facility, the RV sites are designed for dry camping only, meaning no individual water, sewer, or electric hookups are available. However, the park supports RVers with a large seasonal camp store that stocks groceries, firewood, and camping gear. Practical needs are met via a dedicated dump station, potable water fill-up points, and a central facility featuring coin-operated showers and laundry, which are highly valued by long-term travelers and hikers alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a wealth of adventure right at their doorstep. The campground serves as a primary trailhead for scenic hikes such as the Doyles River Falls and Jones Run Falls, both featuring beautiful cascades and lush forest scenery. Beyond the footpaths, a slow drive along Skyline Drive offers dozens of overlooks perfect for sunset photography. Wildlife is abundant here, with frequent sightings of black bears and white-tailed deer right near the campsites.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is perfect for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural scenery and direct trail access over resort-style luxuries. It is an ideal fit for families looking to disconnect from technology and nature photographers seeking the best morning light in the Blue Ridge. If you appreciate quiet nights under a star-filled sky and a rustic atmosphere that honors the spirit of the great outdoors, this mountain retreat is an essential stop on your Virginia journey.

Massive Loop

This was our first campground we stayed while spending a week in Shenandoah. The sites are mixed but generally have natural barriers from neighbors unlike some of the larger grounds in Shenandoah. We loved the privacy and proximity to the Appalachian trail, views were excellent when taking the trail. It's unfortunate though that dogs are not allowed on the "discovery" trails like the Frazier trail for easier route to get back to the campground while hiking.

Loft Mountain Campground is a fantastic spot and definitely one of our favorites in Shenandoah! It’s better than Mathew’s Arm Campground when it comes to food access, firewood availability, and basic camping amenities — everything felt easy and convenient here. The greenery level is just right — less dense than Mathew’s Arm (so you get more open sky views) but more wooded than Big Meadows, giving a nice mix of shade and privacy. We also did the Blackrock Summit Trail, which was an easy hike with a stunning view at sunset, just 8 mins drive from this loft mountain campground — highly recommend adding it to your trip! Loved that there are many other Appalachian Trail sections right around the campground, making it a great base for short or longer hikes. We had so much fun during our stay and would definitely come back for the perfect mix of convenience, greenery, and adventure.

8/10: A lot of bugs during summer, and the park rangers often do not enforce the noise level during quiet hours. The campsite being on a mountain is definitely more densely packed than others I been to. In the summer there’s no way to look out to the other mountains from the campsite, but during winter with the leaves gone it is definitely able to. At night stars are quite visible with in the campsite. Not seen a single bear in the 4 days I been here. Plenty of deers and rabbits though. Also, Verizon does not get signal here at all.

An Amazing Camping Experience! 🌲☕🍺 Our stay here was absolutely fantastic! The entire campground is incredibly well-maintained, with clean showers, toilets, and laundry facilities that made everything super convenient. There’s even a small on-site shop stocked with all the essentials you could possibly need for camping — from gear to locally brewed beer, which was a delightful surprise! The park rangers were outstanding — so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a spot with a view, I highly recommend Block E, Parking Spot 50. That’s where I snapped my favorite picture of the trip. Imagine starting your morning with a hot cup of coffee on a scenic ledge, soaking in peaceful nature views — the kind of moment that makes you feel like you’re in a postcard. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or trying it out for the first time, this place is a gem. Can’t wait to come back!

Always love this campground. Nice bathrooms, no showers. Views are amazing, wild life lots of deer at dusk must have seen 15. Some sites very hilly. The front of my camper was 12 to 15 inches lower than back. Otherwise a favorite.
