Shoshone/Double Cabin
Overview
The Shoshone National Forest hosts the Double Cabin Campground, a primitive retreat located at the end of Horse Creek Road near Dubois, Wyoming. This site offers an authentic backcountry experience for travelers who want to escape the crowded commercial parks. Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Absaroka Mountains, the campground serves as a gateway to the Teton Wilderness. It is a place where the landscape remains largely unchanged, providing a serene environment for those prepared for a self-sufficient stay.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked deep within the Wind River Ranger District, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. The journey involves a long drive on Horse Creek Road, which transitions into a gravel surface that demands a sturdy vehicle. Once there, you are greeted by the rushing waters of the Wiggins Fork River. The scenery is defined by steep volcanic cliffs and dense forests, creating a sense of isolation that is rare even in the rural West.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service site, amenities are focused on the basics. There are no electrical or water hookups, making this a dry camping destination. The facilities available include:
- Vault toilets and hand pumps for water
- Standard picnic tables and fire rings
- Dedicated horse corrals for equestrian use
Because this is active grizzly habitat, the park provides bear-resistant food storage containers to ensure a safe environment for all visitors. These minimal amenities help maintain the wild character of the area.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure starts at the trailhead, with direct access to the Teton and Washakie Wilderness areas. Hiking and horseback riding are the primary activities, with trails leading deep into the backcountry. Anglers can test their luck in the nearby streams for native trout, while wildlife photographers often spot elk, deer, and occasionally wolves or bears. The nearby town of Dubois offers a glimpse into western history with its museums and local charm.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize solitude and natural beauty over modern conveniences. It is particularly suited for horse owners and hunters due to its proximity to vast wilderness tracts. If you enjoy boondocking and possess a vehicle capable of navigating rough forest roads, you will find this to be a peaceful sanctuary. It is best avoided by those with large, low-clearance rigs or those requiring constant connectivity.

The camp hosts are the best. Cleanest vault toilet I’ve ever seen. This is our favorite place to go camping. So many people come back every year that you make friends with them and look forward to seeing them again the next year. 15 years of memories so far!
