Shoshone/Fox Creek

Overview

Shoshone/Fox Creek Campground offers a quintessential Wyoming camping experience nestled within the Shoshone National Forest. Located along the scenic North Fork Highway, this facility serves as a peaceful gateway for those traveling toward the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The atmosphere here is decidedly rustic, trading the hum of resort life for the sounds of wind through the pines and the nearby river. It is an ideal spot for travelers who value natural beauty and a slower pace over modern luxuries.

Location & Surroundings

This campground is situated approximately 45 miles west of Cody, tucked into the rugged Absaroka Range. The North Fork of the Shoshone River flows adjacent to the sites, providing a stunning backdrop of jagged peaks and lush forest canopy. At an elevation of roughly 6,700 feet, visitors can expect cool mountain air and a landscape rich with native wildlife, including the possibility of spotting elk or grizzly bears wandering through the wilderness surrounding the camp.

Amenities & Park Features

As a national forest site, the amenities focus on providing a primitive camping experience. The park features basic facilities to support a self-sufficient stay, including:

  • Vault toilets maintained by the Forest Service.
  • Potable water available via hand pumps.
  • Individual sites with picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Bear-resistant food lockers for safety.

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, making it essential for RVers to arrive with full tanks and charged batteries.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the proximity to Yellowstone National Park, which is just a short, scenic drive further west. Anglers will appreciate easy access to the North Fork of the Shoshone River for blue-ribbon trout fishing. Nearby hiking trails offer various levels of difficulty for exploring the backcountry of the Absaroka Mountains. For a dose of history, a trip back toward Cody allows visitors to explore the Buffalo Bill Center of the West or witness the impressive engineering of the Buffalo Bill Dam.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for self-contained RVers and van lifers who enjoy dry camping in a forest setting. Due to the tight turns and smaller site pads, it is ideal for small-to-mid-sized rigs rather than large motorhomes or long fifth wheels. If you are a traveler who prefers the sound of a rushing river over a television and wants a budget-friendly basecamp near Yellowstone, Shoshone/Fox Creek is a perfect fit for your Wyoming adventure.

The view of the Shoshone River is just amazing! We hiked in May and it was super windy but no complaints. Great walk and easily marked, also had a bathroom. It had lots of little benches to take in the views.

This trail is very close to the downtown Cody, only a few minutes drive to their parking spots. Nice and eaay walk. We walked some side trails away from the main trails to see the river. The small side trails can be harder walk. There is one bathroom in the park.

It was a lovely walk/loop with a cute path down to the magnificent Shoshone River. Plentiful parking for my 23 foot motorhome, gravel witch helped since it had rained a lot the night before.
